Question
I am developing a combined BHA toner and moisturizer product for oily skin. I plan to use the following formulation:
- Encapsulated Salicylic Acid 6.60%
- Panthenol 5.00%
- Liquid Beta Glucan 10.00%
- Camelia Sinensis Leaf Extract 5.00%
- Niacinamide 4.00%
- Glycyrrhiza Inflata Root Extract 1.00%
- Natural Moisturizing Amino Acids 3.00%
- Sodium Lactate Plus 2.00%
- Urea 1.00%
- SodiumPCA[50] 1.00%
- Phenoxyethanol 1.00%
- Allantoin 0.30%
- Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice[1:10] 0.10%
I plan to thicken the mixture into a gel using Pro Polymer at 1.5-2%.
Based on this formulation:
- What will the resulting pH be, and what pH range should it ideally be kept at?
- If I use these ingredients, will the skin feel be acceptable? I am aiming for a watery, non-sticky, and non-tacky texture on the face.
Answer
Hello,
Thank you for sharing your updated BHA Toner formula and your skin concerns and goals.
Based on the staff's feedback:
- They recommend separating the formula into a BHA Toner and a separate Moisturizer Gel (or other product type) because Encapsulated Salicylic Acid can be sensitive to other ingredients.
- They noted that many of the moisturizing ingredients you've included are more suitable for dry skin and might feel too heavy or make oily skin feel greasier.
Regarding your specific questions:
- pH: The staff mentioned that the pH of the separated formulas they suggested would be mildly acidic and likely wouldn't require adjustment. While they didn't give a specific pH for your combined formula, the BHA ingredient will contribute acidity. For Encapsulated Salicylic Acid, the optimal pH might differ from free salicylic acid, and the staff's feedback implies the resulting pH is suitable in their proposed separate formulations.
- Skin Feel: The staff did not directly comment on the skin feel of your combined toner formula. However, the simple BHA Toner part they suggested (Encapsulated Salicylic Acid + Panthenol + Water) is likely to be watery and non-sticky. For your combined formula, the potential heaviness of the moisturizing ingredients mentioned by the staff could affect the desired non-sticky feel.
In summary, the staff advises separating the BHA component and reviewing the moisturizing ingredients to ensure they are suitable for oily skin and achieve the desired light, non-sticky feel.
