Body Spray for Odor Elimination and Fragrance
Question
How to formulate a body spray for eliminating food and body odors, ensuring compatibility with fragrance, and what other ingredients like preservatives and skin conditioners are necessary for safety and efficacy?
Answer
Body Spray for Food Odor
For creating a body spray to eliminate food odors and incorporating fragrance, consider the following odor neutralizers:
- Odor-Kill™: This ingredient effectively absorbs odors, including food odors. However, a significant caution is that it will also absorb the fragrance in your formula, making it highly unsuitable for formulas where you want to add perfume.
Citromask™ (Natural Deodorizer): This is a natural deodorizer with no odor of its own. It works well on fatty acid group odors (like body odor) and cigarette smell. It's soluble in oil, alcohol, or Dipropylene Glycol and can be used in skincare products. It is not stated to absorb fragrance. If you prefer a natural ingredient and focus on body odor/fatty acid-like smells, Citromask™ is an option that can be used with fragrance.
Odor-Kill DO™ (Octenidine HCl, Deodorant): This ingredient is a blend of Ethylhexylglycerin, Propylene Glycol, and Octenidine Dihydrochloride, functioning as a preservative for deodorants and effectively inhibiting odor-causing bacteria. It also has Emollient and Humectant properties, helping the skin feel smoother and more moisturized. It is easily soluble in water and can be used in cosmetic formulas with a pH range of 4-9. Odor-Kill DO™ is a very interesting option for a body spray as it offers comprehensive benefits: it helps inhibit the source of odor (bacteria), acts as a preservative, and provides skin conditioning simultaneously. It does not have limitations regarding use with fragrance.
In summary: If you want to create a spray that can be mixed with fragrance, Odor-Kill™ is not suitable as it will absorb the fragrance. A more recommended option is Odor-Kill DO™ due to its multi-functional properties suitable for a body spray (antibacterial deodorizing, preservative, skin conditioning). Alternatively, you could use Citromask™ if you prefer a natural deodorizer and focus on body odor/fatty smells.
Other ingredients to consider adding to the spray:
- Preservative: Although Odor-Kill DO™ has preservative properties, adding an additional broad-spectrum preservative to a water-based spray formula is highly recommended to prevent microbial growth and ensure product safety and shelf life. Choose a preservative that is safe for skin, such as the Phenoxyethanol group or Potassium Sorbate + Sodium Benzoate (for formulas with appropriate pH).
- Skin Conditioning/Moisturizing Agents: Odor-Kill DO™ already provides Emollient/Humectant benefits. However, if you want to enhance skin hydration or counteract potential dryness from the spray (especially if it contains alcohol), you can add additional moisturizing agents like Glycerin, Propylene Glycol (already present in Odor-Kill DO™), Butylene Glycol, or Panthenol (Vitamin B5).
Caution: When adding fragrance to a spray, always use a cosmetic-grade fragrance and test for compatibility with other ingredients in your formula.
