Question
I want to make natural body lotion and hand cream. Which preservative should I use between NaturePreserve™ and Mild Preserve (Ethylhexylglycerin)?
Answer
Using NaturePreserve™ in Formulations
Regarding your questions about using NaturePreserve™:
- Dissolving in Water: NaturePreserve™ dissolves in water. While it can tolerate heat, it dissolves effectively at room temperature. You can add it to the water phase.
- Water Temperature: Room temperature water is sufficient for dissolving NaturePreserve™. If you are heating the water phase for your formulation, NaturePreserve™ is heat tolerant and can be added.
- Pungent Smell: It is normal for NaturePreserve™ to have a temporary smell during the dissolving process. It is recommended to avoid inhaling the vapors during this time. The smell should dissipate shortly after mixing.
- Safety: The smell is temporary, and avoiding direct inhalation during mixing is advised. Once incorporated into the final product, it should not pose a risk to the producer or user when used as directed.
Choosing a Preservative for Natural Body Lotion and Hand Cream
When choosing between NaturePreserve™ and Ethylhexylglycerin for a natural body lotion or hand cream:
- NaturePreserve™ Ultra (Gluconolactone & Sodium Benzoate) is a 100% natural preservative and is suitable for use in natural cosmetic formulations. It works best in a pH range of 3-6.
- Ethylhexylglycerin is a synthetic ingredient. While it is considered a gentle preservative and often used in combination with other preservatives, it is not derived from natural sources.
Therefore, if your goal is to create a truly natural product, NaturePreserve™ Ultra would be the appropriate choice.
