Question

I have the following formula:

A Phase :
Water 52%
EDTA 0.1%
Glycerin 3%
Niacinamide 5%
Ectoin 2%
8D Hyaluronic Acid 10%
Ethoxydiglycol 2%
1,2-Hexanediol 5%

B Phase :
Dimethicone 3%
Squalane 7%
Satin Cream Maker™ 1%

C Phase :
Mild Preserved Eco 1%
EGCG 1%
Natural Moisturizing Amino Acids 5%

Can ClayThick™ be used in this formula by mixing with a hand mixer? (Can it be omitted if a hand mixer is used?)

Answer

ClayThick™ Usage in Your Formulation

Regarding your questions about using ClayThick™ in your formula:

  • Using a hand mixer: The product description for ClayThick™ indicates that it requires dispersion in water using a high-speed mixer like a disperser (at least 1000 RPM for about 15 minutes) or a homogenizer (at least 2500 RPM for about 10 minutes) for proper activation and thickening. A standard hand mixer is typically not sufficient to achieve the necessary dispersion and shear force required for ClayThick™ to function correctly as a thickener and stabilizer.
  • Omitting ClayThick™: ClayThick™ is included in this type of oil-in-water (O/W) formulation primarily to act as a thickener and to increase stability, helping to prevent separation or stratification of the phases. Omitting it would likely result in a much thinner product and could significantly compromise the stability of the emulsion, potentially leading to separation over time. Therefore, it cannot be simply omitted without negatively impacting the final product's texture and stability.

If you do not have access to a disperser or homogenizer, you might need to consider using a different type of thickener or gel maker that is suitable for hand mixing, although this would require reformulating that part of your A phase and potentially adjusting other ingredients to maintain stability and texture.
