Basic Guide for Cleansing Balm Formulation (Natural Oil-Free)

For a Cleansing Balm formulation that is gentle, effectively removes sunscreen, and does not use natural oils, the following main components can be used:

• Solubilizer and Emulsifier: Use PEG-8 Glyceryl Isostearate as the main component. It acts as both a solubilizer and an emulsifier, helping synthetic oils dissolve dirt, sunscreen, and makeup effectively. When it comes into contact with water, it transforms into a milky emulsion, making it easy to rinse off without leaving an oily residue on the skin. It can be used at a concentration of 1-30% of the formula.
• Synthetic Oil/Ester: Choose synthetic oils that provide a good feel and help dissolve impurities, such as Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride or other Ester Oils that are not derived from natural sources, to form the main base of the balm.
• Thickener/Structuring Agent: Use synthetic waxes or fatty alcohols to give the balm its consistency, such as Synthetic Wax or Cetyl Alcohol, in appropriate amounts to achieve the desired balm texture.
• Additional Components (Optional): You may add oil-soluble skin conditioning agents, antioxidants, or preservatives suitable for the formulation.

Mechanism of Action:

This Cleansing Balm formulation uses synthetic oils to dissolve stubborn dirt and sunscreen on the skin. PEG-8 Glyceryl Isostearate then acts as a link between the oil and water. When the balm is massaged onto dry skin and a small amount of water is added, it turns into a milky emulsion, which helps to completely rinse away dirt and oil with water, without leaving the skin feeling dry or tight.

Choosing synthetic oils and avoiding certain natural oils can help reduce the chance of clogged pores for some skin types. PEG-8 Glyceryl Isostearate is a relatively gentle emulsifier, suitable for facial cleansing products.
