Cleansing Water Formula Modification for Dry, Sensitive Skin

Question

I have mixed Cleansing Water according to the following formula:

  • Coco Wash (PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate) 7.0%
  • MakeUp-Wash (PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides) 7.0%
  • Propylene Glycol 10.0%
  • Phenoxyethanol SA (Optiphen Plus) 0.5%
  • Distilled Water 75.5%

When I tried using this mixture to remove makeup, I found that it cleans well, but my skin feels quite dry afterward.

Normally, I have dry, dehydrated, and sensitive skin that is easily irritated. If I add 1.5% Aloe Vera Extract or 1.5% Panthenol, will it help make my skin more moisturized after cleansing? Or if there are other better ingredients to help increase moisture, please advise.

Thank you.

Answer

Cleansing Water Formula Modification for Dry Skin

Your current cleansing water formula, containing Coco Wash™, MakeUp-Wash™, Propylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol SA (Optiphen Plus), and Purified Water, is effective at removing makeup but is causing dryness on your skin. This can happen because even mild surfactants can remove some natural skin lipids.

To make your cleansing water more suitable for your dry, dehydrated, and sensitive skin, adding moisturizing and soothing ingredients is a good approach.

Both Aloe Vera Extract and Panthenol are excellent choices for this purpose:

  • Aloe Vera Extract: Known for its soothing, anti-inflammatory, and hydrating benefits. It helps calm irritation and moisturize the skin.
  • Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5): A powerful humectant and emollient that attracts and retains moisture, improves the skin barrier, and has soothing properties. It's particularly beneficial for dry and sensitive skin.

Adding 1.5% of either ingredient, or a combination, should help improve the skin's hydration and reduce the feeling of dryness after cleansing.

Other ingredients you could consider for enhanced hydration include:

  • Glycerin: A very common and effective humectant that draws water into the skin.
  • Super-HYA™ (Sodium Acetylated Hyaluronate): A form of hyaluronic acid that provides deep moisture.

You can try adding 1.5% Panthenol first, or a blend of Panthenol and Aloe Vera Extract. Adjust the percentage of Purified Water to accommodate the added ingredients while keeping the total formula at 100%.

Experimenting with adding one or a combination of these ingredients should help improve the post-cleansing feel for your dry, sensitive skin.
