Question

I would like to ask about Flora Solve™ Clear (for mixing fragrance in colorless water). We want to make a mosquito repellent spray with the following ingredients: 1. Ethyl alcohol, 2. Water, 3. Essential oils. We would like to know if adding Flora Solve™ Clear will make the product water cloudy. We want the product water to be clear. We previously tried using Tween 20 and it was very cloudy. Please answer.

Answer

Clear Mosquito Repellent Spray with Essential Oils

You are asking if using Flora Solve™ Clear will result in a clear product for your mosquito repellent spray containing ethyl alcohol, water, and essential oils, as you experienced cloudiness with Tween 20.

According to the product descriptions:

  • Tween 20 (Polysorbate 20) is described as being incompletely soluble in oil, which can lead to turbidity. The description explicitly states that if you need a clear solubilizer, Flora Solve™ Clear should be used instead.
  • Flora Solve™ Clear is specifically designed to combine essential oils and fragrance oils with water to create clear and stable emulsions. It is described as a colorless and odorless solubilizer that can create micro-emulsions where oils are suspended in water in a particle size small enough to be clear and stable. It is recommended as a higher-efficiency alternative to Flora Solve™ if clarity is not achieved, and is suggested when a clear, colorless, high HLB solubilizer is needed instead of Polysorbate 20 or 80.

Therefore, using Flora Solve™ Clear is expected to help you achieve a clear product for your mosquito repellent spray, unlike Tween 20, which is known to cause turbidity.

How to use Flora Solve™ Clear in your formula:

  1. Mix Flora Solve™ Clear with your essential oils first. The recommended ratio is 2-5 parts Flora Solve™ Clear to 1 part essential oil, depending on the specific essential oil used. Stir or blend well until completely mixed.
  2. Add this mixture to your water and ethyl alcohol base and stir until combined.

Remember to avoid high heat during mixing, as this can affect the essential oils.
