คำถาม

My formula contains the following ingredients: MakeUp-Wash 2%, Propylglene Glycol 10%, Mild Preserved Eco 0.5%, Cucumber 2.5%, Biogenic SA-200 1%, and Water remaining. Why is the formula not clear? The water did not become clear after adding MakeUp-Wash in the final step. What is causing this? Thank you.

Based on the ingredients in your formula and their properties, the cloudiness you are experiencing is likely due to the insufficient solubilization of some components in the water phase.

Here's a breakdown:

  • MakeUp-Wash (PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides) is a solubilizer designed to help oil-soluble ingredients disperse in water. At 2%, it might not be enough to keep all other ingredients, especially Biogenic SA-200 and potentially some non-water-soluble parts of the Cucumber Extract, fully clear in the solution. The recommended usage rate for MakeUp-Wash in cleansing water is typically 3-5%.
  • Biogenic SA-200: While the exact nature of "Biogenic SA-200" isn't specified, if "SA" refers to Salicylic Acid (a common ingredient for exfoliation and acne treatment), standard Salicylic Acid is not water-soluble and requires a solvent like Propylene Glycol to dissolve. Even if dissolved in Propylene Glycol, incorporating it clearly into a water-based formula often requires a sufficient amount of a suitable solubilizer like MakeUp-Wash.
  • Cucumber Extract: Although Cucumber Extract is generally water-soluble, natural extracts can contain trace amounts of compounds that might not be fully compatible with the water phase without adequate solubilization.
  • Order of Addition: Adding the MakeUp-Wash last, after other ingredients are already in the water, is not the most effective way to use a solubilizer. Solubilizers work best when they are mixed with the ingredient(s) to be solubilized before that mixture is added to the main water phase.

To make your formula clear, you can try the following:

  1. Increase MakeUp-Wash Concentration: Gradually increase the percentage of MakeUp-Wash in your formula. Try increasing it to 3% or 4% to see if it improves clarity.
  2. Change Mixing Order: A better mixing method would be to combine the Biogenic SA-200 and Cucumber Extract with the Propylene Glycol and MakeUp-Wash first. Mix this blend thoroughly until everything appears dissolved or well-dispersed. Then, slowly add this mixture to the water phase while stirring continuously. Add the Mild Preserved Eco last.

By increasing the amount of solubilizer and ensuring it is properly mixed with the ingredients it needs to solubilize before adding to water, you should be able to achieve a clear solution.
