Question
What type of colorant should be used for translucent (clear) soap, and what type for opaque (white) soap? Specifically, is oil-soluble pigment suitable for clear soap and lake pigment for opaque soap?
Answer
Coloring Clear Glycerin Soap
For coloring clear glycerin soap, it is recommended to use oil-soluble pigments. These pigments are designed to disperse well in oil-based or oil-containing formulations, which helps maintain the transparency of the clear soap base.
An example of an oil-based colorant is ReadyMix™ FD&C Yellow No.5 Lake (Oil Based). This product is a lake pigment dispersed in an oil base, making it easy to mix directly into your soap formulation. It is soluble in oil and some silicones.
For opaque soaps (like white soap), lake pigments are typically used.
