Question

When using ActiveProtect OX (an antioxidant) at 1% in a formulation, is it still necessary or beneficial to also include Disodium EDTA (a chelating agent) at 0.2%?

Answer

ActiveProtect OX (Pentaerythrityl Tetra-di-t-butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate) acts as an antioxidant, directly preventing formulation degradation caused by oxidation reactions.

Disodium EDTA, on the other hand, functions as a chelating agent, binding to various metal ions that may be present in the formulation. These metal ions can accelerate oxidation reactions.

Since these two ingredients have different mechanisms of action, using both ActiveProtect OX and Disodium EDTA together in a formulation can provide more comprehensive and synergistic protection than using just one. Therefore, even when using ActiveProtect OX at 1%, including Disodium EDTA at 0.2% is still beneficial for enhancing the overall stability of the formulation.
