Question

Hello, I would like to ask if using SPF ULTRA II at 15% with DHHB at 5% will roughly achieve an calculated SPF of 50 PA+++, or if I need to mix with other sunscreen ingredients to get PA+++?

Answer

Sunscreen Formulation with SPF Protect Ultra II and DHHB

Based on the information available:

  • SPF Protect Ultra™ II at 15% concentration is stated to provide SPF 50, PA++ (minimum value).
  • DHHB at 5% concentration alone is stated to provide PA+++.

Combining 15% SPF Protect Ultra™ II with an additional 5% DHHB should result in a formulation with an SPF of 50 or potentially higher (as DHHB can boost SPF), and a PA rating of PA+++ or likely PA++++. This is because SPF Protect Ultra™ II already contains DHHB as one of its components, and adding more DHHB will further increase the UVA protection.

Therefore, using SPF Protect Ultra™ II at 15% and DHHB at 5% together should be sufficient to achieve an estimated SPF 50 and at least PA+++, likely reaching PA++++. You would not necessarily need to add other sunscreen ingredients specifically to achieve PA+++ based on the properties of DHHB at 5% usage.

Please note that the actual SPF and PA values of any formulation must be confirmed through laboratory testing of the final product.
