When formulating a sunscreen, the choice of UV filters is critical. While Zinc Oxide is a widely used sunscreen ingredient, it's important to select a type specifically suitable for sunscreens. The description for one type of Zinc Oxide found in our search (Ultra-Fine, Non-Yellow, Non-Coated, USP) explicitly states it is not suitable for sunscreen formulations, even though it has UVA filtering ability.
