Combining Zinc Oxide Nano and Zinc PCA in Sunscreen Formulation
Question
Can Zinc Oxide nano and Zinc PCA be used together in a sunscreen formulation?
I understand that Zinc Oxide nano primarily provides sun protection (UVA/UVB) and has some surface antibacterial properties but doesn't absorb into the skin to treat acne. I also understand that Zinc PCA is absorbed and helps with oil control, killing acne bacteria, and healing acne wounds, but does not provide sun protection.
Given these different functions, can these two ingredients be combined in the same formula, and do their functions overlap or are they complementary?
Answer
Hello!
Yes, you can use both Zinc Oxide nano and Zinc PCA together in a sunscreen formulation. Their functions are different and complementary, not redundant.
- Zinc Oxide nano primarily acts as a physical sunscreen, providing protection against UVA and UVB rays by staying on the skin's surface. It has some antibacterial effect on the skin's surface but does not get absorbed, so it doesn't directly help with acne within the skin.
- Zinc PCA is absorbed into the skin and works to reduce oiliness, kill acne-causing bacteria, and help heal acne wounds. It does not provide sun protection.
Therefore, using both ingredients allows your sunscreen formulation to provide both sun protection (from Zinc Oxide nano) and benefits for reducing oiliness and acne (from Zinc PCA).
