Comparing Acne Spot Treatments and Anti-Clogging Exfoliants (Yanhee, Murad, Paula's Choice)

Question

I had an issue with Benzac 5% causing stinging and inflammation on my face, including areas without acne. (I'm unsure if this was related to the product expiring in 2013/03). My skin became very dry, tight, and peeling.

To address the dryness and peeling, I've been alternating between Physiogel cream and Aloe Vera gel. My skin is much better now, though still slightly dry and peeling.

My current problem is that I feel many clogged pores when I puff out my cheeks. I'm not sure if they are small clogged pores or fungal acne. I used Yanhee acne spot treatment with the following ingredients:

  • Sulphur 2-3 %
  • Salicylic Acid (BHA)
  • Zinc
  • Aloe

This product made the small pimples almost disappear overnight and improved the inflamed acne, so I think it suits my skin. I would like to ask if switching to Murad Acne Spot Treatment, which has similar ingredients but adds several others, would be better. The Murad product has the following ingredients:

  • Sulfur 3.0%
  • Glycolic Acid (AHA)
  • Salicylic Acid (BHA)
  • Zinc
  • Oat Extract
  • Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate
  • Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate
  • Grape Seed Extract
  • Allantoin

Also, I need advice on a product to prevent clogged pores. I am considering between Paula's Choice BHA 2% Liquid and Murad Exfoliating Acne Treatment Gel. Could you please compare them based on their ingredients?

Paula's Choice BHA 2% Liquid Ingredients:
Salicylic Acid (beta hydroxy acid/exfoliant), Phytosphingosine (cell-communicating ingredient), Hydroxyethylcellulose (gel-based thickener), Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract (antioxidant), Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract (antioxidant) Epilobium Angustifolium (Willow Herb) Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract (anti-irritant), Bisabolol (anti-irritant), Sodium Hydroxide (pH-adjusting agent), Tetrasodium EDTA (chelating agent).

Murad Exfoliating Acne Treatment Gel Ingredients:
Active Ingredient: Salicylic Acid (1.0%)
Other Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Alcohol Denat., Butylene Glycol, Glycolic Acid, Methyl Gluceth-10, PPG-5-Ceteth-20, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Hydrogen Peroxide, Rice Amino Acids, Zinc Aspartate, Ascorbic Acid, Chitosan, Retinol, Polysorbate 20, Arnica Montana Flower Extract, Epilobium Angustifolium Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Fruit Extract, Lecithin, Tocopherol, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Palmitoyl Hydroxypropyltrimonium Amylopectin/Glycerin Crosspolymer, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Water, Zinc Acetate, Linoleic Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Propyl Gallate, Disodium EDTA, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Tetrasodium EDTA

Answer

Skincare Advice for Acne and Recovery

It sounds like your skin reacted strongly to the Benzac 5%, which can happen, especially if your skin barrier was compromised or if the product was near its expiration date and potentially less stable, as the staff mentioned. It's good that you stopped using it and focused on healing the inflammation and dryness with moisturizing products like Physiogel cream and Aloe Vera gel.

Comparing Acne Spot Treatments: Yanhee vs. Murad

You found that the Yanhee acne spot treatment (Sulfur 2-3%, Salicylic Acid (BHA), Zinc, Aloe) worked well for you. The Murad Acne Spot Treatment has a similar base of Sulfur (3.0%), Salicylic Acid (BHA), Zinc, and Aloe, but includes additional ingredients like Glycolic Acid (AHA), Oat Extract, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Grape Seed Extract, and Allantoin.

Based on the ingredients:

  • Sulfur and Salicylic Acid (BHA) are effective for acne treatment by reducing bacteria, promoting exfoliation, and dissolving clogged pores.
  • Zinc can help reduce oiliness and inflammation.
  • Aloe is known for its soothing and moisturizing properties.
  • The additional ingredients in the Murad product, such as Oat Extract, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, and Allantoin, are known for their anti-inflammatory and soothing benefits, which could be beneficial for skin prone to irritation. Glycolic Acid (AHA) provides additional exfoliation, and Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (a form of Vitamin C) and Grape Seed Extract offer antioxidant benefits, potentially helping with marks over time.

As the staff reply indicated, the added ingredients in Murad are generally beneficial, although their concentration might be low. If cost is not a major concern, the Murad product with its broader range of soothing and antioxidant ingredients might offer additional benefits, especially for skin that has experienced inflammation. However, since the Yanhee product worked well for your small pimples and improved inflamed acne, sticking with it is also a valid choice, particularly if your skin is sensitive. The effectiveness can vary from person to person, so if you are curious, you could try the Murad product, but be mindful of how your skin reacts, especially to the AHA.

Post-Healing: Moisturizing and Treating Marks

Once your skin has healed from the inflammation and dryness, the focus should shift to restoring the skin barrier, maintaining moisture, and addressing any remaining marks.

Key ingredients for this phase include:

  • Ceramides: These are essential lipids found naturally in the skin barrier. Replenishing ceramides helps repair the barrier, reduce dryness, and improve overall skin health. Look for products containing Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, Ceramide EOP, or a Ceramide Complex.
  • Hyaluronic Acid: A powerful humectant that draws moisture into the skin, keeping it hydrated and plump.
  • Glycerin: Another effective humectant that helps maintain skin hydration.
  • Fatty Acids: Ingredients like Linoleic Acid (found in Vitamin F) are crucial components of the skin barrier and help with moisture retention.
  • Soothing Ingredients: Continue using ingredients like Aloe Vera, Allantoin, Oat Extract, and Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate to keep the skin calm and reduce residual redness or irritation.
  • Vitamin C: Ingredients like Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate can help with antioxidant protection and may gradually improve the appearance of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark marks).

You can look for moisturizers or serums that contain a combination of these ingredients to help restore your skin's balance and fade marks.

Choosing an Anti-Clogging Product: Paula's Choice vs. Murad

You are considering Paula's Choice BHA 2% Liquid and Murad Exfoliating Acne Treatment Gel for preventing clogged pores. Both contain Salicylic Acid (BHA), which is effective for this purpose due to its ability to exfoliate inside the pores.

Let's compare the two based on the ingredients provided:

  • Paula's Choice BHA 2% Liquid: Contains Salicylic Acid (2%), Phytosphingosine, Grape Seed Extract, Green Tea Extract, Willow Herb Extract, and Bisabolol.

    • Pros: Contains a good concentration of BHA (2%). Includes soothing and antioxidant ingredients like Green Tea Extract, Willow Herb Extract (natural source of salicylic acid), and Bisabolol. Phytosphingosine can help with the skin barrier and has some antimicrobial properties.
    • Cons: The base ingredients are not fully listed, so it's hard to assess the overall formulation.
  • Murad Exfoliating Acne Treatment Gel: Contains Salicylic Acid (1.0%), Alcohol Denat., Butylene Glycol, Glycolic Acid, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Hydrogen Peroxide, Rice Amino Acids, Zinc Aspartate, Ascorbic Acid, Chitosan, Retinol, Oat Extract, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Grape Seed Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Witch Hazel Water, Zinc Acetate, Linoleic Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Propyl Gallate, Disodium EDTA, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Tetrasodium EDTA.

    • Pros: Contains a blend of exfoliants (Salicylic Acid, Glycolic Acid) and numerous beneficial ingredients like Aloe Vera, Zinc Aspartate, Retinol, Oat Extract, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Grape Seed Extract, Green Tea Extract, Witch Hazel Water, and Linoleic Acid, which offer soothing, antioxidant, and skin-restoring benefits.
    • Cons: Contains Alcohol Denat., which, as the staff mentioned, can be drying and potentially irritating for some skin types, especially skin that has been recently inflamed or is prone to dryness. The concentration of Salicylic Acid is lower (1.0%) compared to Paula's Choice (2%).

Considering your history of inflammation and dryness, the presence of Alcohol Denat. in the Murad gel is a significant factor. While it contains many beneficial ingredients, the alcohol could potentially cause dryness and irritation, counteracting the soothing effects of the other components.

Paula's Choice BHA 2% Liquid, with its higher concentration of BHA and inclusion of soothing ingredients without explicitly listing drying alcohols (though the full ingredient list is needed for a complete assessment), might be a gentler option for exfoliation and preventing clogged pores, especially given your skin's recent sensitivity. The staff's comment also leaned towards the potential issue with alcohol in the Murad product.

Ultimately, the best choice depends on your skin's tolerance. If you choose to try either, start slowly and observe how your skin responds. If you experience any redness, peeling, or discomfort, reduce the frequency of use or stop using the product.

After your skin has fully recovered and is no longer dry or inflamed, you can gradually introduce an anti-clogging product. Pay close attention to how your skin feels and looks. If you experience any redness, peeling, or discomfort, reduce the frequency of use or stop using the product.
