4. Thickener / Gel Maker: Adjusts the cream's viscosity and improves formula stability, such as ClayThick™ or CreamThick™ or CreamMaker EG™ which some ingredients can act as both emulsifiers and thickeners.
5. Clay Powder: The main active ingredient in mud masks, known for absorbing oil and impurities, such as Kaolin or Green Clay. The usage amount depends on the type of clay and desired texture.
6. Preservative: Essential for water-containing formulas to prevent contamination and extend product shelf life, such as Mild Preserved Eco™.

Basic Guide for Making a Cream-Based Mud Mask

For beginners, it might be easier to use simple emulsifiers and thickeners like CreamMaker EG™, which is both an emulsifier and thickener and can be used in a cold process. You just mix it into the water phase, then add the oil phase and other ingredients.

Alternatively, you can create a basic cream base using a heat-required emulsifier like Emulsifying Wax 1000 mixed into the oil phase. Heat both the water and oil phases to a similar temperature (around 70-75°C), combine them, and stir or blend until a cream forms. Then, add the thickener (if used separately) clay powder, preservative, and any other desired ingredients.

General Steps:

1. Prepare the water and oil phases (if using a heat-required emulsifier, heat both phases to around 70-75°C).
2. Add the emulsifier to the appropriate phase (some in oil, some in water).
3. Combine the water and oil phases and stir or blend until a cream forms.
4. Add the thickener (if used separately) and mix well.
5. Once the cream cools down (below 40°C), gradually add the clay powder while stirring or blending to ensure the clay is evenly dispersed and the mixture is smooth.
6. Add the preservative and any other desired ingredients, such as extracts or fragrance.
7. Adjust the formula's pH to a suitable range for the skin and other ingredients (mud masks might have a slightly higher pH depending on the clay type).

Considerations:

• The amount of clay powder used will affect the mask's thickness and oil absorption. Start with a small amount and gradually increase as needed.
• Adding clay powder slowly and mixing thoroughly to prevent clumping.
• Some thickeners, like ClayThick™, may require time to fully hydrate and build viscosity (e.g., 48 hours). Check the specific instructions for each ingredient.
