Question
I made a formulation with the following ingredients and percentages, but the resulting texture is very liquid. What did I do wrong and how can I fix it?
Ingredients:
- Perfect-C TransDerm™ 10%
- Double Hyaluron Liquid 4%
- Disodium EDTA 0.2%
- Phenoxyethanol 0.5%
- Water 84.3%
- Light Cream Maker 1%
Mixing Procedure:
I mixed the oil phase ingredients (1 + 6) with the water phase ingredients (3 + 5 + 2), and finally added 4.
Answer
Formulation Advice: Addressing Low Viscosity\n\Based on the ingredients and mixing method you used, the likely reason your mixture is too liquid is the presence of electrolytes from the Double Hyaluron Liquid and Disodium EDTA.\n\nLight Cream Maker is an effective emulsifier and thickener, but its ability to create viscosity can be reduced by electrolytes. Your formula contains two ingredients that act as electrolytes: Double Hyaluron Liquid (due to Sodium Hyaluronate) and Disodium EDTA.\n\nWhen electrolytes are present, especially when mixed into the water phase before emulsification, they can interfere with the thickening mechanism of Light Cream Maker, resulting in a thinner consistency than expected.\n\nTo address this, you can try the following:\n\n1. Increase Light Cream Maker Concentration: The description for Light Cream Maker suggests increasing its concentration (e.g., to 1.5% or 2%) when electrolytes are present to achieve the desired thickness.\n2. Adjust Mixing Method: A better approach when using electrolytes with Light Cream Maker is to first create the basic cream by mixing the oil phase (containing Perfect-C TransDerm™ and Light Cream Maker) with the water phase (containing only water initially). Once the cream has formed, gradually add the electrolyte-containing ingredients (Double Hyaluron Liquid and Disodium EDTA) while stirring. If the cream thins out, add a little more Light Cream Maker to regain the desired viscosity before adding more of the electrolyte solution. Add the Phenoxyethanol at the end as you did before.\n\nBy increasing the Light Cream Maker concentration and/or adjusting the mixing method to incorporate electrolytes gradually, you should be able to achieve a thicker, creamier texture for your formulation.
