Question

I am making a night cream. When I mixed the cream, the texture was well combined and did not separate. However, after using it for a while, the cream separates. Could you please recommend a cream binder (emulsifier)?

Answer

Cream separation after some time can be caused by several factors, such as insufficient or unsuitable emulsifier, an inappropriate formula, or incorrect mixing steps and temperatures.

For making a night cream that requires better stability, you can consider using these emulsifiers:

  • Emulsifying Wax 1000 (e.q. Emulgade 1000 NI): This is an Emulsifier Wax that effectively binds the water and oil phases together, keeping the cream stable and preventing separation. It is suitable for O/W (Oil-in-Water) creams and lotions.
  • Sucrose Cream Maker™ (e.q. Emulgade Sucro Plus): This is a 100% natural-based, nonionic emulsifier that helps create stable emulsions with a lamellar structure, which significantly improves cream stability.
  • CreamMaker EG™ (e.q. Simulgel EG): This acts as both a binder (emulsifier) and a thickener. It helps stabilize the cream and improve its texture. It can be used in cream and lotion formulas.

When choosing an emulsifier, you should consider the type of oils used in your formula, the amount of the oil phase to be emulsified, and the desired texture of the cream. Additionally, improving mixing techniques, such as heating the water and oil phases to similar temperatures before mixing and stirring continuously until the cream cools down, is also crucial in preventing cream separation.
