Question

Hello, I would like advice on mixing a water-based Deodorant Spray formulation containing alcohol, designed to reduce sweat and body odor and nourish the skin.

Ingredients:

  1. Ethyl Alcohol (99.9%) 30%
  2. Anti-Sweat (Aluminum Chlorohydrate) 15%
  3. Prebio-care 3%
  4. DeoMax™ Liquid 1%
  5. Odor-Kill™ (water-soluble) 1%
  6. Allantoin 0.5%
  7. Betaine 5%
  8. Water, remaining amount to total 100%

Proposed Mixing Steps: Mix 1+2 together, mix 3+4+5+6+7+8 together, then mix the two parts together.

Are the ingredients and ratios suitable? And is the mixing procedure appropriate?

Thank you.

Answer

Formulation Review

Your selection of ingredients is suitable for a deodorant spray designed to reduce sweat and odor while providing skin conditioning benefits. The percentages you've chosen for each ingredient are generally within the recommended usage rates based on the product information.

  • Anti-Sweat (Aluminum Chlorohydrate): The 15% concentration is within the effective range for sweat and odor control. This ingredient works by dissolving in sweat and forming a temporary plug in sweat ducts.
  • Ethyl Alcohol: The 30% alcohol acts as a solvent and can contribute to a faster-drying feel.
  • DeoMax Liquid & Odor-Kill: These ingredients are effective odor absorbers and neutralizers, complementing the action of Aluminum Chlorohydrate.
  • Prebio-care, Allantoin, and Betaine: These ingredients are excellent for skin conditioning, helping to moisturize, soothe irritation, and support a healthy skin microbiome, which is beneficial when using antiperspirants.

Mixing Steps

Your proposed mixing steps involve combining Ethyl Alcohol and Aluminum Chlorohydrate in the first part. Based on the properties of Aluminum Chlorohydrate, it is primarily soluble in water, not alcohol. It dissolves and becomes active when it comes into contact with moisture (sweat).

A more effective method to ensure all ingredients are properly dissolved and dispersed in a water-based formula is to dissolve all the water-soluble components in the water phase first before adding the alcohol.

Here is a suggested revised mixing procedure:

  1. Combine the water with Anti-Sweat (Aluminum Chlorohydrate), Prebio-care, DeoMax Liquid, Odor-Kill, Allantoin, and Betaine.
  2. Mix thoroughly until all the powder ingredients (Aluminum Chlorohydrate, Prebio-care, Allantoin, Betaine, Odor-Kill) are completely dissolved. Gentle warming (below 50°C to protect Odor-Kill) with stirring can help dissolve Allantoin and Aluminum Chlorohydrate, especially since Allantoin's solubility in water at room temperature is limited to 0.5%, although Betaine helps improve this. Ensure the mixture cools down before the next step.
  3. Once everything in the water phase is fully dissolved and the mixture is at room temperature, slowly add the Ethyl Alcohol while stirring continuously until a homogeneous solution is obtained.
  4. Check the pH of the final mixture. For optimal performance and stability of Aluminum Chlorohydrate and Allantoin, the pH should ideally be in the range of 4-6. Adjust with a suitable acid or base if necessary.

This revised method ensures that the active ingredients are properly dissolved and integrated into the formula, leading to a more stable and effective product.

The ingredients and their ratios are appropriate for your intended product, but adjusting the mixing order will improve the formulation process and potentially the final product's clarity and stability.
