Question
I want to make a deodorant stick using Fractionated Coconut Oil as the main ingredient. I also have Microcrystalline Wax (Refined) but it's not hard enough for a stick. How can I make the stick harder? This is also relevant for making lip balm.
Answer
Based on the staff's reply regarding making a deodorant stick and your comment about wax hardness for a lip balm:
- For the deodorant stick: The staff advises that oils like Fractionated Coconut Oil are generally not suitable for underarm deodorant products as they can feel sticky. Instead, ingredients like Cyclomethicone and alcohol are often used to provide a light feel because they evaporate quickly.
- Regarding the hardness of your stick/lip balm: Your observation that Microcrystalline Wax isn't hard enough seems related to making a lip balm with coconut oil. The staff confirmed that to make the stick harder, you should increase the proportion of wax, such as Microcrystalline Wax. A high proportion of oil will result in a liquid consistency that won't solidify properly.
