Question

I am developing a natural Hair puff product to cover thinning hair, using coffee for color. Can I use rice flour as the base, mix it with coffee liquid, dry it, grind it again, and then spray an extract onto the powder?

Answer

Guidelines for Developing Natural Hair Puff Innovation

The concept of using rice flour and coffee color is a very good starting point. However, to achieve a Hair puff product that is effective in covering thinning hair and performs well compared to market products, factors such as texture, adhesion of the powder to the hair, and color fastness need to be considered. These are challenges when using natural raw materials directly.

Considerations and Potential Solutions

  1. Powder Base: Using finely ground rice flour might result in a heavy texture that lacks the desired fluffiness, and its adhesion to hair might not be sufficient for effective thinning hair coverage. Rice flour is good at absorbing oil but does not possess the electrostatic properties needed to help the powder adhere to hair like typical hair fibers do.

    • Approach: Consider using cosmetic-grade powders with modified properties, such as Ricesorb™, which is a processed rice starch designed for oil absorption and improved texture in cosmetics, offering better properties than plain rice flour. Alternatively, a pre-made base specifically for Hair setting powder could be considered, as these often contain ingredients that help with texture and hair styling, such as Hair Setting Powder.
    • For coverage and volume, adding fibers that adhere well to hair via static electricity would help the product function more like market-standard Hair puff products. Although Lash Fiber found in the system is listed for eyelashes, it serves as an example of a fiber type ingredient used to add thickness and length in products aiming for a hair-like or lash-like appearance.
  2. Color: The coffee color obtained by boiling coffee liquid, mixing, drying, and grinding might result in inconsistent color and poor color fastness. It could easily rub off or dissolve when exposed to sweat or moisture.

    • Approach: To achieve a consistent and long-lasting brown color suitable for cosmetics, consider using cosmetic-grade colorants such as Iron Oxides Brown, which is a highly stable inorganic pigment safe for cosmetic use, or Caramel Color HiStain™, a liquid caramel color designed for better staining than regular types. However, using liquid colorants still requires careful consideration regarding moisture content in a powder product.
  3. Adding Liquid Extract (Spray): Spraying liquid extract onto dry powder after grinding will cause the powder to clump easily and increase the moisture content, leading to a risk of microbial contamination and reduced shelf life.

    • Approach: If adding extracts is desired, consider using powdered extracts that can be mixed directly with the powder base. If liquid extracts must be used, find an appropriate mixing step and control the final moisture content of the product to be as low as possible. Also, consider using suitable preservatives for natural formulations to prevent microbial growth.

Conclusion

Creating a natural Hair puff using rice flour and coffee color is feasible as a starting point. However, to achieve a product quality comparable to market products, it is recommended to refine the formulation by using cosmetic-grade ingredients with more suitable properties. This includes using Ricesorb™ or Hair Setting Powder as the powder base, using Iron Oxides Brown or Caramel Color HiStain™ for better color stability, and avoiding the addition of liquid extracts to the final powder. Powdered extracts should be used instead, or an appropriate mixing method should be employed to control moisture, along with considering preservatives and overall product stability.
