Developing Clear Oil Gel with Alternative Oils and Gellants
Question
Hello, I would like to consult about ingredients used in oil formulas. In the formula I have attached, Sucrose Stearate and Sucrose Palmitate are used. I would like to know if I can develop a formula using other oils besides Fractionated Coconut Oil. Will it result in a clear gel texture? Or are there other ingredients you can recommend? I want to develop an oil gel formula that provides a clear gel texture. Thank you.
Answer
Hello,
Regarding your question about developing an oil gel formula with a clear texture using oils other than Fractionated Coconut Oil and incorporating Sucrose Stearate and Sucrose Palmitate:
Sucrose Stearate and Sucrose Palmitate are primarily emulsifiers that help bind water and oil. Information suggests that Sugar Gel, which is related to Sucrose Esters, can provide a soft and clear gel texture, but it requires approximately 10% water in the formula. Therefore, using only Sucrose Stearate and Sucrose Palmitate in an oil-only formula without water may not result in the desired clear gel texture.
For developing a clear oil gel formula using different types of oils, there are specific Oil Gelling Agents designed for this purpose.
Recommended Oil Gelling Agents for a Clear Gel Texture:
- Oil Thick™ Transparent (Dextrin Palmitate): This ingredient is specifically designed to create a clear oil gel texture. It can be used with various types of oils, including emollients, providing a clear gel with high viscosity.
- Oil-Fix™ Series (Silica Dimethyl Silylate): This group of Silica ingredients helps increase viscosity in oils and silicones and can also create clear oil gels. There are different types depending on the oil used:
- Oil-Fix™ O: Suitable for polar oils and all types of glycols.
- Oil-Fix™ W: Suitable for all types of oils (polar and non-polar), as well as hydrocarbons and silicones.
The choice of oil also affects the clarity of the final oil gel. Generally, oils that are light in color or colorless and have lower viscosity tend to result in clearer gels.
Therefore, if you want to develop a clear oil gel formula using oils other than Fractionated Coconut Oil, it is recommended to consider using Oil Thick™ Transparent or Oil-Fix™ O/W, which are dedicated oil gelling agents, as they are better suited for creating clear gels in oil-based systems without requiring water, compared to using only Sucrose Stearate and Sucrose Palmitate.
