Difference between PhosphoMax™ and Phospholipid

PhosphoMax™ and Phospholipid (specifically the Hydrogenated Lecithin type, Product ID 1169) are both derived from phospholipids but serve different primary functions in cosmetic formulations.

• Phospholipid (Hydrogenated Lecithin): This type of phospholipid is primarily used as a penetration enhancer, helping other ingredients absorb better into the skin. It also offers significant skin benefits such as moisturizing, strengthening the skin barrier, and reducing irritation. It is generally not recommended for use as a primary emulsifier. It is dispersed in water and oil at room temperature (below 40°C).
• PhosphoMax™ (Natural Phospholipid Emulsifier): This is a modified phospholipid specifically designed to be a highly effective natural emulsifier. It helps create stable oil-in-water emulsions, giving formulations a nice creamy texture. Like other phospholipids, it also aids in the penetration of active ingredients and provides skin benefits. It can withstand heat up to 80°C and is typically dispersed in the oil phase before mixing with water.

Which is better?

Neither is inherently "better"; they are suited for different purposes:

• If your main goal is to create a stable emulsion using a natural emulsifier, PhosphoMax™ is the more appropriate choice.
• If you already have a primary emulsifier and want to enhance penetration, boost moisturization, improve the skin barrier, or reduce irritation, Phospholipid (Hydrogenated Lecithin) is a suitable option.

Both can contribute to improved skin feel and active ingredient delivery, but PhosphoMax™ is formulated specifically for emulsification, while Phospholipid (Hydrogenated Lecithin) is more focused on skin benefits and penetration enhancement when used as a co-emulsifier or additive.
