Question

I have a question about two ingredients, SepGEL 305 and Easy Cream Maker™. They have the same chemical name (INCI Name: Polyacrylamide & C13-14 Isoparaffin & Laureth-7), the same listed usage amount, and similar properties. However, their prices are different. Could you please explain what makes them different?

Answer

Based on the information for SepGEL 305 and Easy Cream Maker™, it is found that although they share the same chemical name (INCI Name: Polyacrylamide & C13-14 Isoparaffin & Laureth-7) and have similar basic properties, such as being cold-process emulsifiers and thickeners that are not electrolyte tolerant, there are some key differences that may affect their price and suitability for use.

Differences between SepGEL 305 and Easy Cream Maker™:

  • Maximum Oil Load:
    • Easy Cream Maker™ can emulsify up to 10% oil in a formula.
    • SepGEL 305 can emulsify up to 5% oil in a formula.

Therefore, if your formula contains more than 5% oil but not exceeding 10%, you would need to choose Easy Cream Maker™.
  • Usable pH Range:
    • Easy Cream Maker™ can be used in a pH range of 2.5-11.
    • SepGEL 305 can be used in a pH range of 3-11.

Easy Cream Maker™ can thus perform well in slightly more acidic formulas compared to SepGEL 305.

These differences in the ability to emulsify oil and the tolerated pH range are factors that lead to different performance characteristics in cream formulation, which can be the reason for the price difference, even with the same chemical name.
