DIY Cosmetic Formulation Review: Gentle Liquid Soap & Whitening Gels
Question
I'm formulating a gentle liquid soap and two whitening gels (face and body). I have some questions about the mixing procedure for the liquid soap and how to reduce the slippery feeling after rinsing. I also wanted to share my whitening gel formulas and my positive experience using the face gel and Timed-Released BHA Toner.
Gentle Liquid Soap Formula:
- Part A: Lauryl Glucoside, Coco-Wash, emulPearl, Glycerin, Creamy Foamer
- Part B: Pro Polymer, water, Pro Vitamin B5 (D-Panthenol Care)
- Can I add
Creamy Foamerto part A and warm it together? - Should I add
Pro Vitamin B5 (D-Panthenol Care)to part B after mixing Pro Polymer and water? - Do I need to use
Flora Solvefor the fragrance, or can I add it directly at the end? - How can I reduce the slippery feeling after rinsing this liquid soap?
Whitening Face Gel Formula:
- Safe-B3 (Niacinamide)
- GlucoBright (Acetyl Glucosamine)
- Alpha Arbutin
- Natural Moisturizing Amino Acids
- Allantoin
- Xanthan Gum
- Other standard gel ingredients (water, preservative)
I mix all ingredients into water, then add Xanthan Gum. Is this mixing method correct?
Whitening Body Gel Formula:
- B3
- NAG
- Alpha-arbutin
- Natural Moisturizing Amino Acids
- Calendula Extract
- Licorice Extract
- Glycerin
- Phenoxyethanol
- Other standard gel ingredients (water, gelling agent)
I use the same mixing method as the face gel. Is this method appropriate for the body gel as well?
I've been using the whitening face gel and Timed-Released BHA Toner for over a month and have seen significant improvement in clarity and texture. Thank you for your advice!

DIY Formulation Review and Advice
Thank you for sharing your DIY formulations and questions. It's great that you are exploring making your own products! Based on your formulas and the previous discussion, here is a review and some advice:
Gentle Liquid Soap Formula
Your liquid soap formula looks good. The previous advice you received is correct regarding the mixing steps and the fragrance.
- Creamy Foamer: Yes, you can add Creamy Foamer to part A (Lauryl Glucoside, Coco-Wash, emulPearl, Glycerin) and warm it together. Creamy Foamer is a foam booster that helps create a soft and smooth foam.
- Pro Vitamin B5 (D-Panthenol Care): Yes, you should add Pro Vitamin B5 to part B (Pro Polymer and water) after mixing them to form the gel base. Pro Vitamin B5 is water-soluble and works well in the water phase.
- Fragrance: You can add the fragrance directly at the end without using Flora Solve. The surfactants in your formula (Lauryl Glucoside, Coco-Wash) and the gelling agent (Pro Polymer) will help to solubilize the fragrance.
Regarding the slippery feeling after rinsing, this is a common characteristic of gentle, sulfate-free surfactant systems like the one you are using, especially when combined with moisturizing ingredients like Glycerin and Pro Vitamin B5. To reduce this feeling, as suggested previously:
- Reduce Glycerin and Pro Vitamin B5: Try reducing the percentage of Glycerin (Product ID: 143) and Pro Vitamin B5 (Product ID: 6873) in your formula. These ingredients contribute to the moisturizing feel, which can be perceived as slippery.
- Adjust pH: Increasing the pH slightly (towards 7.5-8) can also help reduce the slippery feel and give a more "clean rinse" feel, similar to traditional bar soaps. However, be mindful that a higher pH can be less gentle on the skin.
- Adjust Surfactants: Reducing the amount of Lauryl Glucoside (Product ID: 177) and Creamy Foamer (Product ID: 305) might also affect the feel, but these are key for cleansing and foam, so adjust cautiously.
Experiment with reducing Glycerin and Pro Vitamin B5 first, as they are the primary contributors to the moisturizing/slippery feel.
Whitening Face Gel Formula
Your whitening face gel formula is well-formulated with effective ingredients for brightening. The combination of Safe-B3 (Niacinamide) (Product ID: 74) and GlucoBright (Acetyl Glucosamine) (Product ID: 116) is known to work synergistically for whitening and reducing dark spots. Alpha Arbutin (Product ID: 68) is also a potent whitening agent.
As advised previously, for combination skin, you might find that removing Natural Moisturizing Amino Acids (Product ID: 214) is suitable as the other ingredients already provide sufficient hydration without making the T-zone too oily.
The mixing method you described (adding all ingredients to water, then Xanthan Gum) is generally correct for a gel formulation using Xanthan Gum (Product ID: 216). Ensure you disperse the Xanthan Gum well to avoid clumps.
It's great to hear you are seeing positive results with this gel and the Timed-Released BHA Toner!
Whitening Body Gel Formula
Your body gel formula is a good adaptation of the face gel, omitting Allantoin (Product ID: 75) and adding Glycerin (Product ID: 143) for a smoother feel on the body. The ingredients B3 (Product ID: 74), NAG (Product ID: 116), Alpha-arbutin (Product ID: 68), Natural Moisturizing Amino Acids (Product ID: 214), Calendula Extract (Product ID: 123), Licorice Extract (Product ID: 69), and Phenoxyethanol (Product ID: 155) are suitable for body care.
As noted in the previous discussion, Alpha-arbutin can be a costly ingredient for a body product, but if budget is not a concern, it is effective.
The mixing method is the same as the face gel, which is appropriate for this type of formula.
Remember to always perform a small patch test before using any new formulation extensively on your skin.
