DIY Gentle Sulfate-Free Facial Cleanser Formula
Question
I would like a DIY formula for a gentle facial cleanser similar to Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. I understand that Cetaphil contains sulfates which can be irritating for some skin types. Could you provide a sulfate-free alternative formula and instructions?
Answer
Sulfate-Free Gentle Cleanser Formula
The original Cetaphil cleanser contains Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, which can be irritating for some skin types. A gentler alternative uses a sulfate-free base.
Here is a simple formula:
- Sulfate Free Shampoo Base (pH 7, Clear, Foaming): 20%
- Mild Preserved Eco™: 1%
- Water: 79%
Instructions:
- Combine the Sulfate Free Shampoo Base and Water. Stir gently until well mixed. Avoid vigorous stirring to prevent excessive foam.
- Add Mild Preserved Eco™ and stir until fully incorporated.
- Let the mixture sit for 1-2 days to allow the texture to set into a gel.
Adjusting Thickness:
If you prefer a thicker gel consistency, you can add a thickener. Here are some options and their typical usage rates:
- EasyThick ™: Use at 3-15%. Add to the water phase and heat to 80°C to dissolve before adding the base, or add after mixing water and base and heat to at least 80°C.
- SugarThick™: Use at 1-5% (1-3% recommended). It is a powder that dissolves at 50-60°C. You can warm the formula or warm the SugarThick™ separately until liquid before adding.
- AnyGel™: Use at 1-2.5%. Mix with water and blend or stir until dissolved to create a gel texture.
Choose one thickener and add it to your formula according to its specific instructions until the desired thickness is achieved.
This formula provides a gentle, sulfate-free cleansing option.
