DIY Water Essence with Hyaluronic Acid and Alpha Arbutin

Question

I am trying to make a DIY water essence and have put together the following formula:

  • Double Hyaluronic liquid 5% 10 g
  • Alpha Arbutin 2 g
  • Phenoxyethanol 0.5 g
  • DI water 87.5 g

The total is 100 g.

Is this formula okay? What is the correct mixing order? This is my first time trying to make a product, and I plan to use it as a replacement for a hydrating essence like Hada Labo blue bottle.

Answer

DIY Alpha Arbutin + Hyaluronic Acid Water Essence Formula Review

Thank you for sharing your formula! Let's review it.

Your formula includes:

  • Double Hyaluronic liquid 5% (10g) - provides 0.5g (0.5%) Hyaluronic Acid
  • Alpha Arbutin (2g) - provides 2% Alpha Arbutin
  • Phenoxyethanol (0.5g) - provides 0.5% Phenoxyethanol
  • DI Water (87.5g)
  • Total: 100g

The concentrations of the active ingredients (2% Alpha Arbutin for brightening and 0.5% Hyaluronic Acid for hydration) and the preservative (0.5% Phenoxyethanol) are well within typical and effective usage rates for a water-based product like a water essence. This formula appears well-balanced and suitable for your goal of creating a hydrating and brightening essence.

Mixing Instructions

Here is a recommended mixing order for your formula:

  1. Preparation: Ensure all your tools and containers (beakers, stirring rods, storage bottle) are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized before you begin. Accurate weighing is crucial, especially for small amounts.
  2. Water Base: Measure the 87.5g of DI water into a clean beaker.
  3. Dissolve Powder: Add the 2g of Alpha Arbutin powder to the DI water. Stir gently but consistently until the Alpha Arbutin is completely dissolved. Ensure there are no undissolved particles.
  4. Add Liquids: Once the Alpha Arbutin is fully dissolved, add the 10g of Double Hyaluronic liquid 5% and the 0.5g of Phenoxyethanol to the mixture.
  5. Mix Thoroughly: Stir the entire solution gently until all ingredients are evenly combined and the liquid is clear and uniform. Try to avoid incorporating too much air (creating bubbles).
  6. Transfer: Carefully pour the finished water essence into your clean storage container.

Important Tips for First-Time DIY

  • Cleanliness: Maintaining a clean working environment and using sanitized equipment is essential to prevent microbial contamination of your product.
  • Storage: Store the finished product in a clean, airtight container away from direct light and heat.
  • Patch Test: Always perform a patch test on a small, inconspicuous area of your skin before applying the product widely, especially since this is a new formulation for you.
  • Observation: Keep an eye on the product over time. Any changes in color, smell, or texture could indicate instability or contamination. If you notice changes, it's best to discard the product.

This DIY formula provides the key ingredients you are looking for and should be a good alternative for a hydrating and brightening essence. Good luck with your first attempt!
