DMAE Odor Masking and Niacinamide for Irritation

Asked by: dymilo On: May 27, 2021 Product Type: Cosmetics

Question

  1. I would like to ask, if I use DMAE (SkinTight MD™) Liquid at 1%, what odor masking agent do you recommend and in what quantity to eliminate the odor? Also, if I increase the percentage to 3%, can I simply triple the amount of the odor masking agent?

  2. Can Safe B3 (Vitamin B3, Niacinamide) be used as an anti-irritant? What percentage do you recommend?

Thank you.

Answer

Answer to Your Formulation Questions

Here are the answers to your questions regarding DMAE (SkinTight MD™) Liquid and Safe B3:

1. DMAE (SkinTight MD™) Liquid Odor

DMAE (SkinTight MD™) Liquid has undergone a deodorization process to reduce its strong characteristic odor. However, it still retains a characteristic smell.

Finding a suitable odor masking agent and its optimal concentration depends on the specific masking agent used and the overall formulation. There isn't a standard recommendation that applies universally.

Regarding increasing the concentration of the masking agent proportionally when increasing DMAE from 1% to 3%, this is generally not how odor masking works. Odor perception and masking are complex and not linearly related to the concentration of the malodorous substance. You would need to test different masking agents and concentrations at the 3% DMAE level to find what effectively minimizes the odor in your specific formula.

2. Safe B3 (Vitamin B3, Niacinamide) as Anti-Irritant

Yes, Safe B3 (Vitamin B3, Niacinamide) can help make the skin stronger and fight irritations. The product description specifically mentions its ability to fight irritants and that adding irritation-reducing ingredients can help reduce irritation caused by DMAE.

The recommended usage rate for Safe B3 is 1-10%. A typical recommended concentration is 5%. You can use up to 10% of the Safe-B3 type without causing flushing or skin irritation, making it suitable for use at higher concentrations if needed for its various benefits, including its anti-irritant properties.
