Question
I am formulating a simple makeup remover using the following components: make up wash, glycerin, and water. Does this water-based formula require the addition of a preservative?
Answer
A preservative is absolutely necessary for this formula.
Any cosmetic product containing water (H₂O) must be preserved to prevent the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria, mold, and yeast. Without a preservative, the product will quickly spoil, change color/odor, and pose a risk of skin infection.
- Glycerin's Role: Glycerin is a humectant (moisturizer) and can sometimes act as a preservative booster at very high concentrations (typically over 20-30%), but it is not a sufficient standalone preservative when diluted with water and other ingredients.
- Recommendation: You must add a broad-spectrum preservative that is effective in the pH range of your makeup remover formula.
