Question

I used the product `stabilized vitamin c` which is a liquid serum. My skin became very dry after using it before moisturizer. It made my face dry like dehydrated skin. What should I do? I have stopped using it, and my face is no longer dry.

Answer

Addressing Dryness from Stabilized Vitamin C Serum

It sounds like you experienced dryness when using the Stabilized Vitamin C (Natural-C Glycol™) Serum. This can happen with some Vitamin C products, and it's good that your skin returned to normal after you stopped using it.

The Stabilized Vitamin C (Natural-C Glycol™) Serum has a low pH, typically in the range of 2-3. While this low pH helps with the stability and absorption of the L-Ascorbic Acid form of Vitamin C, it can also be quite acidic and potentially irritating or drying for some skin types, especially if your skin is already prone to dryness or dehydration.

If you wish to continue using Vitamin C for its benefits but want to avoid dryness, you might consider alternative forms of Vitamin C that are formulated at a higher, less acidic pH. Some options include:

  • Ascorbyl Glucoside (AA-2G Stabilized Vitamin C): This form is stable at a higher pH range (6.5-6.8) and is often less irritating.
  • Perfect-C™ (Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate): This is an oil-soluble form of Vitamin C, typically used in formulas with a pH around 5.0-5.5, which is also less acidic and can be more moisturizing.
  • Ascorbyl Glucoside 20% Gel (MaxActivate™): This is a ready-to-use gel form of Ascorbyl Glucoside, likely formulated at a skin-friendly pH.

When using any active serum, including Vitamin C, it's also beneficial to follow up with a good moisturizer to help keep your skin hydrated and support its barrier function. If you try another Vitamin C product and still experience dryness, consider reducing the frequency of application or mixing it with your moisturizer.

Since stopping the product resolved the dryness, it confirms that the serum was the likely cause. Choosing a different form or formulation of Vitamin C with a higher pH is a good approach if you want to reintroduce this ingredient into your routine.
