Question

I am developing an essence formula for combination skin with acne, oiliness, and acne marks. My formula includes AcneBee™ Extra (an oil) and Pro Polymer. I prefer a liquid texture for the essence. Based on my formula, how can I achieve a stable liquid texture when using AcneBee™ Extra and Pro Polymer?

Answer

Hello! Thank you for sharing your essence formula for combination skin with acne, oiliness, and acne marks.

Based on your formula and the feedback from our staff, there are a couple of points to consider, especially regarding the inclusion of AcneBee™ Extra (which is oil-based) and the amount of Pro Polymer needed.

You mentioned you prefer a liquid texture. AcneBee™ Extra is an oil, and to incorporate it into a water-based essence, you would typically need an emulsifier or a higher concentration of a thickener like Pro Polymer to create a stable emulsion (a cream or gel-cream texture).

Here are the two main options based on whether you include AcneBee™ Extra:

Option 1: Keep AcneBee™ Extra (Resulting texture will be gel/cream)
If you wish to keep AcneBee™ Extra in your formula, you will need to use Pro Polymer at a higher concentration (0.8-1.0%) to emulsify the oil and create a stable gel or cream texture. This will not result in a liquid essence.

  • Mixing Steps (Option 1):
    1. In a container, combine the water and all water-soluble ingredients (Safe-B3™, Willow Bark Extract, Licorice Extract, Rice Vitamin, Hi-EGCG™, Disodium EDTA, Chamomile extract, GlucoBright™, Double Hyaluron Liquid). Stir well to dissolve.
    2. Add Pro Polymer (0.8-1.0%) to the water phase. Blend or stir thoroughly until the Pro Polymer is fully dissolved and a gel/cream texture is formed.
    3. In a separate small container, measure AcneBee™ Extra. Slowly add AcneBee™ Extra to the main mixture while blending or stirring continuously until it is fully emulsified and the texture is uniform (cream).
    4. Add Mild Preserved Eco™ (preservative) and blend/stir to combine.
    5. Adjust the water percentage to reach a total of 100%.

Option 2: Remove AcneBee™ Extra (Resulting texture can be a slightly viscous liquid)
If you prefer a liquid texture, it is recommended to remove AcneBee™ Extra from the formula. You can then use Pro Polymer at a lower concentration (0.2-0.3%) as initially suggested by the staff to give the essence a slight viscosity without making it a gel.

  • Mixing Steps (Option 2):
    1. In a container, combine the water and all ingredients except Pro Polymer and Mild Preserved Eco™ (Safe-B3™, Willow Bark Extract, Licorice Extract, Rice Vitamin, Hi-EGCG™, Disodium EDTA, Chamomile extract, GlucoBright™, Double Hyaluron Liquid). Stir well to dissolve.
    2. Add Pro Polymer (0.2-0.3%) to the mixture. Blend or stir thoroughly until the Pro Polymer is fully dissolved and the liquid is slightly thickened.
    3. Add Mild Preserved Eco™ (preservative) and blend/stir to combine.
    4. Adjust the water percentage to reach a total of 100%.

Additional Recommendations:
Regardless of which option you choose, the staff also recommended adjusting the percentages of two ingredients:

  • Reduce Willow Bark Extract from 10% to 5%. At 5%, it can still provide benefits, and a lower concentration might be less irritating.
  • Reduce Hi-EGCG™ (Green Tea Extract) from 5% to 1-2% to avoid a dark color and potential stickiness.

Please adjust the water percentage in your final formula to make the total 100% based on the ingredients and percentages you decide to use.

Hope this clarifies the mixing process and options for your essence! Let us know if you have any more questions.
