Essential Oil Usage in Diffusers, Scented Beads, and Toner

Question

Hello,

Could you please provide advice on the following points?

  1. Do you have a recommended ratio for Essential oil theive oil (Thieves Oil) for the purpose of disinfecting the air and relieving cold symptoms?

  2. Regarding using Essential oil theive oil from point 1 to make Scented beads:

    • Do I need to add Fragrance fixative? I'm concerned about quick evaporation since it's entirely Essential oil.
    • Can Essential oil used with Scented beads be mixed with oil to reduce the intensity of the released scent? I want a subtly diffused scent.
    • What amount of Fragrance is needed per 100g of Scented beads sold by your company? (An approximate weight is fine so I can order enough).
    • Can the Scented beads that have absorbed Fragrance be reused? If not, can they be used for anything else, or do they have to be discarded?
  3. If I want to add Essential oil to a Toner formulation but don't want to use a Solubilizer, what is the minimum percentage of Alcohol needed?

Thank you.

Answer

Essential Oil Usage and Solid Perfume Beads

1. Recommended Ratio for "Theive Oil" (Thieves Oil) for Air Disinfection and Cold Relief

Since "Thieves oil" is a blend, there isn't one single recommended ratio that applies universally. The specific ratio depends on the individual essential oils used in the blend and the desired intensity.

For air disinfection and cold relief using essential oils (like eucalyptus, tea tree, or blends with similar properties), the most common method is diffusion using an aroma diffuser. A typical recommendation is to add 3-5 drops of essential oil per 100ml of water in an ultrasonic diffuser. You can adjust the number of drops based on the size of the room and your personal preference for scent intensity.

Always ensure good ventilation when diffusing essential oils, especially in enclosed spaces or around children and pets.

2. Using Essential Oil with Solid Perfume Beads

You can definitely use essential oils with solid perfume beads like the Perfume beads, aroma diffuser beads, Solid Perfume.

  • Need for Fragrance Fixative?
Essential oils are volatile and will evaporate over time. While the Perfume beads are designed to absorb and diffuse fragrance over a period of months, adding a small amount of a fragrance fixative can potentially help to extend the diffusion time, especially for top and middle notes which evaporate faster. However, it is not strictly necessary as the beads themselves help to slow down the evaporation compared to just leaving the oil exposed.

  • Mixing with Oil to Reduce Intensity?
Yes, you can mix the essential oil with a carrier oil (such as Fractionated Coconut Oil or Jojoba Oil) before adding it to the beads. This is an excellent way to dilute the essential oil, reduce the overall scent intensity, and achieve a more subtle diffusion. The carrier oil will be absorbed by the beads along with the essential oil.

  • Amount of Essential Oil per 100g of Beads?
Based on the product description for Perfume beads, aroma diffuser beads, Solid Perfume, the recommended mixing rate is approximately 20-30% perfume by weight of the beads. This means for 100g of beads, you would start with 20-30g of essential oil (or essential oil mixed with carrier oil). Some fragrances/oils may be absorbed at higher rates, even 50% or more. You can start with 20-30% and add more if you desire a stronger scent after the initial absorption period (about 1 day).

  • Reusability of Beads?
Once the Perfume beads have absorbed essential oil, they are generally not reusable for a different scent. The oil saturates the beads, and it's difficult to remove the old scent completely to add a new one without mixing the fragrances. They are designed to diffuse the absorbed scent until it fades. After the scent is gone, they are typically discarded.

3. Minimum Alcohol Percentage for Essential Oil in Toner Without Emulsifier

To dissolve essential oil in a water-based toner without using an emulsifier, you would typically need a significant amount of alcohol (such as Ethyl Alcohol) to act as a solubilizer. The exact minimum percentage required depends heavily on:

  • The specific essential oil(s) used (some are more soluble in alcohol than others).
  • The total concentration of the essential oil in the formula.
  • The desired clarity of the final product.

Generally, to achieve a clear or mostly clear solution without an emulsifier, you might need 20% or more alcohol. However, even with high alcohol concentrations, some essential oils may still cause slight cloudiness or separation over time. Using an emulsifier specifically designed for essential oils in water is the most effective way to create a stable, clear, and well-dispersed toner.

Keep in mind that high concentrations of alcohol can be drying to the skin.
