Question

I would like to know about using MakeUp-Wash, Poloxamer 184, and Oilsify 15 in eye makeup remover formulas. I am concerned that MakeUp-Wash might irritate the eyes. Which of these ingredients are suitable for eye makeup remover formulas, considering potential eye irritation?

Answer

Eye Makeup Remover Formula (Wash-Off)

For an eye makeup remover that washes off without needing to be wiped, similar to a cleansing foam for waterproof makeup, you can consider formulas based on cleansing oils or gentle micellar systems that are designed to be rinsed.

Cleansing Oil Type

This type is highly effective for removing waterproof makeup. It works by massaging the oil-based cleanser onto dry skin to dissolve makeup, then adding water to emulsify, and finally rinsing off. Key ingredients for this type are oil-soluble emulsifiers like Oilsify 15 or Oilsify 30, which are known to be gentle around the eyes.

  • Oilsify 15 and Oilsify 30 are oil-emulsifiers specifically designed for cleansing oils. They effectively capture and rinse off makeup and are suitable for eye makeup remover formulas.

Basic Cleansing Oil Formula Structure:

  • Oilsify 15 or Oilsify 30: 10-20%
  • Any suitable cosmetic oil (e.g., LipidSoft Palm, Mineral Oil): up to 100%

How to Use: Massage onto dry face/eye area, add water to emulsify (it will turn milky), then rinse thoroughly.

Gentle Micellar/Cleansing Water Type (Rinseable)

While micellar water is often used with a cotton pad for wiping, some formulations using gentle surfactants can be rinsed off. This type might be less effective on heavy waterproof makeup compared to cleansing oils but is very gentle.

  • Poloxamer 184 is a high-HLB emulsifier commonly used in cleansing water formulas and does not irritate the eyes. It can be used alone or combined with other gentle surfactants.
  • MakeUp-Wash (PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides) is another gentle detergent forming micelles, effective for makeup removal. However, as noted previously, it has the potential to cause eye stinging at higher concentrations, so use with caution around the eyes or at lower percentages.

Choose the type that best suits the level of makeup you need to remove and your preference for texture and usage.
