Fast-absorbing lightweight day body oil formula
Question
I want to make a body oil. If I want the oil to absorb quickly, what chemical or booster should I add to help it absorb faster than using oil alone, without feeling thick or heavy on the skin?
Current formula:
- Refined coconut oil MCT oil 50%
- Squalane oil 30%
- Tea seed oil 10%
- Olive oil 10%
Answer to question 2: Silicone can be used, but I’d like it to be low-clogging.
Answer to question 3: I’d like a day oil texture, light and slippery.
Answer to question 4: Fragrance is included.
But there are no actives yet. Please recommend some too.
Answer
Your current oil blend totals 100%, so any fast-absorbing helper must replace part of the existing oils, not be added on top. For a light “day oil” feel, reduce the heavier natural oils first, especially olive oil and part of tea seed oil/MCT.
Best texture modifiers for this formula
| Ingredient | Suggested level | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| C13-15 Alkane | 10-30% | Very dry, silky, fast-spreading, non-greasy finish; catalog notes non-comedogenic and suitable for oily/acne-prone skin. |
| CocoSilk™ (Coco-Caprylate/Caprate) | 5-20% | Light ester used as a silicone-like alternative; gives slip and reduces oily thickness without evaporating. |
| Isododecane (Ultra Lite) | 5-15% | Very light volatile emollient; evaporates quickly, helps skin feel dry and less greasy; catalog notes it does not clog pores. |
| Dimethicone 1Secs | 3-10% | Volatile silicone, very fast evaporation, gives slip. Good when you want a quick-dry feel. |
| Dimethicone (Very Light/3, Low-Odor) | 2-8% | Non-volatile very light silicone, adds long-lasting smooth slip without much heaviness. |
Recommended starting formula: light day body oil
| Phase | % |
|---|---|
| MCT oil / Caprylic-Capric Triglyceride | 35.0 |
| Squalane | 25.0 |
| C13-15 Alkane | 20.0 |
| CocoSilk™ | 10.0 |
| Tea seed oil | 5.0 |
| Olive oil | 3.0 |
| Natural Vitamin E | 0.3 |
| Fragrance | 0.5-1.0 |
| Optional active, e.g. CoQ10 or Bisabolol | q.s. within recommended range |
| Adjust MCT/Squalane | to 100 |
This will feel much lighter than the original because 30% of the formula is changed from heavier/medium oils into dry-touch emollients.
If you want it even drier and faster
Use C13-15 Alkane 25%, Isododecane 10%, CocoSilk™ 10%, then reduce MCT/olive/tea seed accordingly. This gives a more “dry oil” style, but the fragrance may flash off faster because Isododecane is volatile.
Active suggestions for an anhydrous oil formula
- Natural Vitamin E 0.1-0.5%: recommended first, because your formula contains natural oils and fragrance; helps protect the oil phase from rancidity and also supports antioxidant positioning.
- Coenzyme Q10 0.05-0.1%: oil-soluble antioxidant/anti-aging active. Add below 60°C and use opaque/light-protective packaging.
- Pure-Bakuchiol™ 0.5-1.0%: suitable if you want an anti-aging positioning with lower irritation potential than classic retinoids. Avoid heat; use opaque airtight packaging.
- Bisabolol 0.2-0.5%: good for calming/anti-irritation positioning, especially useful when fragrance is included.
- Perfect-C™ 2-5%: oil-soluble vitamin C option for brightening/antioxidant positioning, but it will raise cost and needs good packaging/stability control.
Processing
Mix the emollients and oils until uniform, then add oil-soluble actives at low temperature. Add fragrance last and mix until clear. Use a clear/solubility check after 24-48 hours and run heat/cool and freeze-thaw stability checks. For packaging, choose an opaque or amber bottle with a small opening/pump to reduce light and air exposure.
