Resolving Gel Liquefaction in DMAE Formulations

It is understood that you encountered an issue where your gel formulation liquefied after adding the liquid DMAE, despite the gel forming correctly beforehand.

While the manufacturer of the liquid DMAE has not changed, there can be slight variations in product characteristics between different production lots. DMAE, particularly at higher concentrations, can sometimes affect the viscosity of gel formulations, especially those using certain types of gelling agents like Pro Polymer.

To address this, you can re-thicken the gel by adding more Pro Polymer to the mixture after you have added the liquid DMAE.

Steps to Re-thicken:

1. Add Pro Polymer gradually, starting with approximately 1% of your total formula weight.
2. Stir the mixture well and allow some time for the Pro Polymer to hydrate and the gel to thicken.
3. If the gel is still too liquid, you can continue adding small amounts of Pro Polymer until the desired consistency is achieved.
4. Ensure the total concentration of Pro Polymer in your formula does not exceed 5% (this includes the initial 2% from your original recipe).

Adding Pro Polymer at this later stage to adjust the viscosity is an acceptable method, even if the original recipe instructs adding it earlier. The key is to achieve the correct final texture.

Note that adding Pro Polymer after the gel has already formed might introduce some foam into the product. This foam should dissipate on its own if the finished product is left to sit undisturbed for about 3 days (with the lid sealed and stored in a cool place).

This approach should help you achieve the desired gel consistency for your DMAE formulation.
