Formula Adjustment for Dry, Sensitive Skin with Seborrheic Dermatitis
Question
My skin is dry, sensitive, and prone to seborrheic dermatitis, currently showing some redness and rash. I'm using a formulation that is causing a film-like feeling and pilling. I want to adjust my formula and have the following questions:
- Will adding ingredients like Bio Yeast Essence and Repair Activator potentially trigger my seborrheic dermatitis? I have a history of seborrheic dermatitis flare-ups when using products similar to SK-II.
- I like the hydration provided by WaterLock but cannot purchase it currently. I have Natural Moisturizing Amino Acids available. Can I add Natural Moisturizing Amino Acids to my formula to boost hydration? Alternatively, can I increase the concentration of Aloe Vera Extract (currently 0.5%) to 1g instead?
Answer
Formula Adjustment Recommendations for Dry, Peeling Skin with Seborrheic Dermatitis
Based on your current formula and the issues you're experiencing (dryness, film/pilling, and sensitivity/seborrheic dermatitis), here are some recommendations for adjusting your formula. The staff's initial assessment that the pilling might be due to the high concentration of MOIST72 is likely correct.
To address the issues while considering your concerns about triggering seborrheic dermatitis and the availability of ingredients:
- Reduce MOIST72: Lowering the concentration of MOIST72 (currently at 5%) is recommended to reduce the film-like feeling and pilling. You could try reducing it to 3% as suggested by the staff.
- Increase Vitamin B5 (Panthenol): Increasing Vitamin B5 from 3% to 5% can significantly boost hydration and help strengthen the skin barrier. Vitamin B5 is also known for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, which can be beneficial for sensitive skin and seborrheic dermatitis.
- Add Natural Moisturizing Amino Acids: Since WaterLock is not currently available and you have Natural Moisturizing Amino Acids at home, adding this ingredient is an excellent way to enhance hydration and support the skin's Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMF). This can help compensate for reducing MOIST72 and provide deeper hydration. You could add this at a concentration of around 3%.
- Consider Aloe Vera Extract: While you could increase Aloe Vera Extract, adding Natural Moisturizing Amino Acids might provide a more direct boost to the skin's inherent hydration mechanisms. You can keep Aloe Vera at 0.5% or slightly increase it if desired, but prioritize adding the Amino Acids for NMF support.
- Avoid Bio-Yeast Essence and Repair Activator for now: Given your history of sensitivity to ingredients similar to Bio-Yeast Essence (like SK-II) and your concern about triggering seborrheic dermatitis, it's prudent to avoid adding Bio-Yeast Essence. While Repair Activator is beneficial for skin repair, it's also a fermented ingredient. To minimize the risk of irritation, it might be best to hold off on adding Repair Activator until your skin barrier is more stable, or perform a careful patch test first if you wish to try it later.
Proposed Adjusted Formula (Example based on 100g total):
- Water: ~71.2 g (Adjust to make total 100g)
- Aloe Vera Extract: 0.5 g
- Allantoin: 0.3 g
- Vitamin B5: 5 g (Increased)
- Liquid Beta Glucan: 10 g
- Calendula Extract: 5 g
- MOIST72: 3 g (Reduced)
- Hyaluronic Acid (Standard + Nano): 1 g
- Phenoxyethanol: 1.0 g
- Natural Moisturizing Amino Acids: 3 g (Added)
This adjusted formula aims to reduce pilling by lowering MOIST72, increase overall hydration and barrier support with higher Vitamin B5 and added Natural Moisturizing Amino Acids, while avoiding ingredients you are concerned might trigger your seborrheic dermatitis.
Important: Always perform a patch test on a small area of skin before applying any new or adjusted formula to your entire face, especially with sensitive skin prone to seborrheic dermatitis.
