Question

Regarding the following formula:

  • Water: 76.3%
  • Disodium EDTA: 0.2%
  • Sym-White: 0.5%
  • N-Acetyl-D-glucosamine: 4%
  • Vitamin B3: 2%
  • Vitamin B5: 2%
  • Zinc PCA: 1%
  • Tea Tree Oil: 0.5%
  • Mineral oil: 10%
  • Light Cream Maker: 1.5%
  • Phenoxyethanol: 0.5%
  • Allantoin: 0.5%

I have the following questions:

  1. Are N-Acetyl-D-glucosamine and Vitamin B3 sufficient for whitening if Sym-White is not included?
  2. For acne treatment, can either Zinc PCA or Tea Tree Oil (or both) help?
  3. Is it necessary to include an anti-irritant, and is Allantoin alone sufficient?

Answer

Based on the staff's feedback regarding your formula for acne treatment and skin whitening:

  • Whitening Agents (N-Acetyl-D-glucosamine and Vitamin B3 vs. Sym-White): The staff suggests that using N-Acetyl-D-glucosamine (4%) and Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide) at 2% might not be sufficient for whitening without Sym-White. They recommend increasing the concentration of Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide) to 5% to achieve sufficient whitening effects without needing Sym-White.

  • Acne Treatment (Zinc PCA vs. Tea Tree Oil): Both Zinc PCA (1%) and Tea Tree Oil (0.5%) can help with acne, but they work differently. Tea Tree Oil has antibacterial properties, useful for inflamed or developing acne where bacteria are present. Zinc PCA helps reduce excess skin oiliness, which is a primary cause of clogged pores (comedones) before they become inflamed acne. Using either or both depends on the specific type of acne you are targeting.

  • Anti-Irritant (Allantoin): The ingredients in your formula are generally not highly irritating, and Tea Tree Oil at 0.5% is considered safe for most skin types. However, the staff noted that Allantoin at 0.5% is too high for the water content (76.3%) as Allantoin's solubility in water is limited to about 0.5% of the water. This means you can only add approximately 0.35% Allantoin to this formula without it precipitating. They recommend using 0.2-0.25% for safety. While not strictly necessary based on the formula composition alone, adding an anti-irritant like Allantoin (at the correct concentration) could be beneficial if your skin is currently irritated or sensitive, helping it to recover and strengthen.
