Formula for Clear, Flexible Oil Gel Air Freshener

Question

I want to make a clear, flexible air freshener gel that doesn't have liquid separation. I previously tried a water-based gel formula, but it turned cloudy and separated. Based on the recommendation to use an oil-based gel with an oil gelling agent like Oil Thick Clear S, could you provide a formula and method for a clear oil gel air freshener using the following components?

  • Mineral Oil (Heavy)
  • Oil Thick™ Clear S
  • Fragrance Oil

Answer

Clear Oil Gel Air Freshener Formula

This formula uses an oil-based gelling agent to create a stable, clear gel that effectively holds and releases fragrance oil.

  • Mineral Oil (Heavy): 85%
    • Acts as the base oil for the gel.
  • Oil Thick™ Clear S: 10%
    • An oil gelling agent that creates a clear, thixotropic (flexible) gel texture.
  • Fragrance Oil (e.g., Holy Basil Oil): 5%
    • Provides the desired scent. You can substitute this with your preferred fragrance oil.

Total: 100%

  • Note: You can adjust the percentage of Oil Thick™ Clear S between 3-15% to achieve your desired gel stiffness. A higher percentage will result in a firmer gel.*

Instructions

  1. Combine the Mineral Oil (Heavy) and Oil Thick™ Clear S in a heat-resistant container.
  2. Heat the mixture to 85-90°C while stirring continuously.
  3. Keep stirring until the Oil Thick™ Clear S powder is completely dissolved and the mixture becomes clear and homogeneous. If it doesn't dissolve at 90°C, you may need to increase the temperature slightly (up to 120°C depending on the specific oil used), but be cautious with heating oils.
  4. Once the mixture is clear and all the gelling agent is dissolved, remove from heat.
  5. Allow the mixture to cool slightly, then add the Fragrance Oil and stir well to ensure it is evenly distributed throughout the gel.
  6. Pour the gel into your desired container before it fully cools and sets.
  7. Let the gel cool completely at room temperature until it sets into a clear, flexible gel.

This oil-based approach addresses the issues you faced previously by creating a system where the oil-soluble fragrance is fully integrated into the gel structure, preventing cloudiness and liquid separation.
