Formulating a Non-Cloudy Cleansing Oil
Question
Hello,
I'm interested in creating a cleansing oil that does not turn cloudy when mixed with water, similar to a product I've seen that does not contain Oil Soap.
Based on the ingredient list of the product I saw, the main components appear to be:
Grape Seed OilMakeUp-Wash(PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides)
My questions are:
- Can I substitute
Grape Seed OilwithFractionated Coconut Oil? If so, can I use just this oil and a surfactant (MakeUp-WashorCoco Wash(PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate))? Or do I need both surfactants, or is one sufficient? - Can I replicate this formula using any natural oil blend (two or three types) and a surfactant (
MakeUp-WashorCoco Wash)? - To best match the original formula, what relaxing essential oil scent might have been used? It had a very relaxing aroma.
Thank you for your advice.
Answer
Formulating a Non-Cloudy Cleansing Oil
Creating a cleansing oil that effectively removes makeup and rinses clean without turning cloudy upon contact with water is achievable by selecting the right ingredients, particularly the surfactant.
The cloudy effect often seen in some cleansing oils when mixed with water is typically due to the type of emulsifier used. Since the product you observed does not turn cloudy and does not contain ingredients like Oil Soap, it likely uses a non-ionic surfactant that allows the oil to emulsify and rinse off clearly.
The two main components you identified in the original product, Grape Seed Oil and MakeUp-Wash (PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides), are indeed suitable for this type of formulation.
- Grape Seed Oil: This is a lightweight natural oil commonly used in skincare for its moisturizing and antioxidant properties. It serves as an excellent base oil for dissolving makeup and impurities.
- MakeUp-Wash (PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides): This is a gentle non-ionic surfactant specifically designed for makeup removers. It forms micelles in water, which helps to effectively lift and remove makeup without drying the skin, and allows the oil phase to rinse away cleanly without creating a cloudy appearance.
Can you substitute ingredients?
- Replacing Grape Seed Oil: Yes, you can substitute Grape Seed Oil with other lightweight natural oils. Fractionated Coconut Oil is a very good alternative. It is a stable, non-greasy oil that is easily absorbed and works well as a carrier oil in cleansing formulations.
- Using only oil + surfactant: A simple formulation can consist primarily of a base oil (or a blend of oils) and a suitable non-ionic surfactant like MakeUp-Wash or Coco Wash (PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate). Both MakeUp-Wash and Coco Wash are gentle surfactants suitable for makeup removers, helping the oil to emulsify and rinse cleanly. MakeUp-Wash is particularly noted for its effectiveness in micellar cleansing.
To best replicate the original formula you observed, using Grape Seed Oil and MakeUp-Wash would be the most direct approach.
Relaxing Scent
The relaxing scent in a cleansing oil would typically come from added essential oils or fragrance oils. Without knowing the exact product, it's impossible to identify the precise scent used. However, common relaxing scents used in cosmetics include:
- Relax Lemongrass
- Calm Me Down
- Morning Meditation
You could experiment with small amounts of these or other relaxing fragrance/essential oils to achieve a similar effect, ensuring they are suitable for use in rinse-off cosmetic products.
