Question

I would like to create a peel-off sheet mask. Do you have any recommended formulations or guidance on how to formulate one?

Answer

Peel-Off Face Mask Formulation

To create a peel-off face mask, the key ingredient is a film-forming polymer. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is commonly used for this purpose as it creates a film that can be peeled off the skin.

Different types of PVA are available, and those with medium viscosity are generally well-suited for peel-off masks. Examples include Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA 217) and Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA 117). Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA 205), which has low viscosity, can also be used.

General Usage Guidelines for PVA in Peel-Off Masks:

  • Usage Rate: Typically used at a concentration of 1-20% in the formula.
  • Mixing Method: Disperse the PVA powder in water at room temperature first, then heat while stirring continuously until it dissolves completely to avoid clumping.

You can also incorporate other beneficial ingredients into your mask base, such as humectants (like Glycerin), soothing agents, or extracts, ensuring they are compatible with the PVA base.

Polyacrylate-21 is another film-forming ingredient, primarily used for gloss and flexibility in products like mascara, but PVA is the more common choice for peel-off masks.
