Question

How can I formulate a sprayable product using Dimethicone 1Secs (50%), Anti-Sweat™ (Aluminum Chlorohydrate) (15%), and purified water (35%)? What emulsifier and quantity should I use to make this mixture homogeneous and suitable for spraying?

Answer

Hello,

Regarding the formula you provided, which contains Dimethicone 1Secs (silicone), Anti-Sweat™ (Aluminum Chlorohydrate), and purified water, to make this formula homogeneous and sprayable, an emulsifier is necessary.

Aluminum Chlorohydrate will dissolve in the water phase, while Dimethicone 1Secs is a silicone that does not mix directly with water. Therefore, we need an emulsifier that helps bridge the silicone and water together.

Based on the product information found, Spray Maker™ is an emulsifier designed to create high-liquidity emulsions that can be sprayed well, which should be suitable for your needs.

Recommended Formula (Adjusted from your original formula to incorporate the emulsifier):

  • Dimethicone 1Secs: 50%
  • Anti-Sweat™ (Aluminum Chlorohydrate): 15%
  • Purified Water: 27%
  • Spray Maker™: 8%

Mixing Method:

  1. In container 1: Mix Purified Water (27%) with Anti-Sweat™ (Aluminum Chlorohydrate) (15%). Stir or mix until the Aluminum Chlorohydrate is completely dissolved (slight heating may be needed as per Anti-Sweat™ instructions). Then, heat this mixture to 75-80°C.
  2. In container 2: Mix Dimethicone 1Secs (50%) with Spray Maker™ (8%). Stir or mix until well combined. Heat this mixture to 70-75°C (Spray Maker™ is soluble in silicone/oil).
  3. Using a high-shear mixer (such as a Homogenizer or Disperser), blend the mixture in container 2 (silicone/oil phase). Slowly pour the mixture from container 1 (water phase) into container 2 while blending continuously in a thin stream.
  4. Continue blending for approximately 20-30 minutes until the mixture is well combined and forms a stable emulsion.
  5. Allow to cool to room temperature.

This formula should help combine the silicone and water components into a stable emulsion that can be filled into a spray bottle. The recommended usage rate of 8% for Spray Maker™ is suggested to achieve an emulsion that is liquid enough for spraying and stable.
