Question

I am looking to formulate a serum to reduce skin inflammation. My initial idea is to use water, glycerin, and Calendula Extract (Water Soluble). I understand that Calendula Extract (Water Soluble) has anti-inflammatory properties, but does glycerin also have this effect? What other water-soluble ingredients can be added to enhance the anti-inflammatory properties of this water-based serum?

Answer

Anti-Inflammatory Serum Formulation

You are looking to create a serum focused on reducing skin inflammation using water, glycerin, and calendula extract.

Your initial idea to use Calendula Extract (Water Soluble) is excellent, as it is well-known for its anti-inflammatory properties, helping to reduce redness and soothe irritated skin.

Regarding Glycerin, while it is a great humectant that provides moisture and hydration to the skin, it does not have significant anti-inflammatory effects itself. It's useful in a serum for its hydrating benefits, but you will need other active ingredients to target inflammation directly.

To boost the anti-inflammatory power of your serum, consider incorporating other water-soluble ingredients known for these properties. Here are some recommendations:

  • Pep-Calm™ (Palmitoyl Tripeptide-8): This ingredient is effective in reducing skin redness and irritation, promoting a calmer complexion.
  • ActiveRelease Paeonol™: Known for its potent anti-inflammatory effects, it helps soothe irritated skin and can support faster recovery from inflammation.
  • Portulaca Extract (Purified Colorless Liquid): This extract is widely used for its ability to reduce various types of skin irritation.
  • Pep®-CalmMax (Acetyl dipeptide-1 cetyl ester): A peptide blend specifically formulated for skin calming, reducing inflammation, redness, and discomfort.

You can formulate a water-based serum using water as the base, adding glycerin for hydration, Calendula Extract (Water Soluble), and selecting one or more of the recommended anti-inflammatory ingredients based on your desired potency and specific concerns. Always adhere to the recommended usage percentages for each active ingredient.
