Question

I recently received the following products:

  • Sea Kelp Bioferment
  • Green Tea Extract

I would like to know if I can use these to formulate a Cellulite control Gel. If so, what other ingredients are needed, and what quantities or percentages should I use? Thank you.

Answer

Cellulite Control Gel Formulation

Based on the ingredients you have, Sea Kelp Bioferment (similar to Sea Kelp Extract) and Green Tea Extract, you can incorporate them into a gel. However, while these ingredients offer benefits like moisturizing, antioxidant properties, and potentially stimulating circulation (Sea Kelp), they are not typically the primary active ingredients for cellulite control.

To create a gel specifically targeting cellulite, you would need to include ingredients known for their anti-cellulite effects. Some effective ingredients for cellulite control include:

  • L-Carnitine: This ingredient is recognized for its ability to help accelerate skin cell turnover and can be effective in reducing the appearance of cellulite and firming the skin. It can be used at a rate of 1-5% (recommended 3%).
  • Caffeine (e.g., Encapsulated Caffeine or in Energy-Blend™): Caffeine is widely used in anti-cellulite products because it helps break down fat under the skin and can help tighten the skin. Encapsulated Caffeine can be used up to 5% for the body. Energy-Blend™, which contains Caffeine, Adenosine, and Vitamin B3, is also used in anti-cellulite formulas at around 5%.

Formulation Suggestion for a Cellulite Control Gel:

You can create a gel base and add your desired active ingredients. A basic structure would be:

  1. Water Phase: Water (e.g., Distilled Water) - adjust quantity based on other ingredients.
  2. Gelling Agent: Add a gelling agent (like Carbomer or a natural gum) to create the gel texture. Follow the supplier's recommended usage rate for your chosen gelling agent.
  3. Active Ingredients:
    • L-Carnitine: 1-5%
    • Encapsulated Caffeine or Energy-Blend™: Up to 5% (for body)
    • Sea Kelp Extract: 1-3% (for moisturizing and antioxidant benefits)
    • Green Tea Extract (e.g., Hi-EGCG™ or Pure-EGCG™): 1-5% (for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits)
  4. Preservative: Add a broad-spectrum preservative to prevent microbial growth. Follow the supplier's recommended usage rate.
  5. pH Adjustment: Adjust the pH to be suitable for the skin (typically pH 4.5-6.5). L-Carnitine works best in a pH range of 3.5-8, but adjusting to skin pH is important for the final product.

Mixing Method:

  • Prepare the water phase.
  • Disperse or dissolve your gelling agent in the water phase according to its instructions.
  • Add the active ingredients (L-Carnitine, Caffeine/Energy-Blend™, Sea Kelp Extract, Green Tea Extract). Ensure they are fully dissolved or dispersed. Note that some Green Tea Extracts (like Hi-EGCG™) should be added in the final step below 40°C.
  • Add the preservative.
  • Mix thoroughly until uniform.
  • Adjust the pH if necessary.

By incorporating specific anti-cellulite actives like L-Carnitine and Caffeine into your gel base along with your Sea Kelp and Green Tea extracts, you can create a more effective cellulite control product.
