Question

Hello,

I want to make a moisturizing body spray using:

  • Fractionated Coconut Oil
  • Lemongrass Oil
  • A clear liquid herbal extract (water phase)

I need advice on which type of ingredient to use to combine the oil and water phases. I want the final product to be sprayable, not thick, but still feel conditioning, similar to applying baby oil.

Thank you in advance.

Answer

Moisturizing Body Spray Formulation

To create a moisturizing body spray combining oils (fractionated coconut oil, lemongrass oil) with a water-based herbal extract, you need an ingredient to mix the oil and water phases. You can use either a solubilizer or an emulsifier.

  • Solubilizers disperse a small amount of oil in water, resulting in a clear or slightly hazy liquid. They are suitable for light sprays with low oil content. Examples include Ultra Solve™ and Free Solve™.
  • Emulsifiers create a stable mixture of oil and water (an emulsion), typically milky. For a sprayable product, you need an emulsifier that creates a very thin emulsion. This approach is better for achieving a conditioning feel similar to baby oil.

For your goal of a sprayable product that feels conditioning and not thick, a light emulsion is recommended.

Recommended Ingredient:

  • Light Lotion Maker: This is an excellent emulsifier for creating light, sprayable textures. It can effectively combine your oils with the water phase to form a stable mist that provides a moisturizing feel. It is designed to handle oil while keeping the formula light enough to spray.

Using Light Lotion Maker will help you achieve a stable, sprayable body mist that leaves the skin feeling conditioned, similar to a light application of oil.
