Formulating Multi-Purpose Pet-Safe Disinfectants and Odor Neutralizers

Question

Hello. I have several large dogs at home and want to make a multi-purpose cleaning and deodorizing solution that actually works. It would be for mopping floors, cleaning bathrooms, disinfecting, and neutralizing urine smells, dog odors, and food smells. Is this possible?

I want it to be a concentrate that is diluted before use. I'm looking for two types of formulas:

  1. Heavy-Duty/Concentrated: A formula that turns cloudy when mixed with water (like Dettol) for strong odors like dog urine. I want to neutralize the odor at the source. Are there other recommendations besides Dettol? I only want to add perfume for a pleasant scent.
  2. Daily Use: A formula for everyday mopping, mixed with water, with some fragrance, but higher quality than general floor cleaners. I want it to be as gentle as possible for children and pets.

Please recommend disinfectants. I have used BKC before.

Answer

For a household with large dogs, creating a high-performance cleaning and deodorizing solution requires ingredients that neutralize odors at the molecular level rather than just masking them. Here are two recommended approaches based on your requirements:

1. Heavy-Duty Concentrated Formula (Cloudy/Dettol-like)

This formula is designed for intense odors like dog urine or strong "doggy" smells. It provides a "cloudy" effect when mixed with water, similar to traditional disinfectants.

  • Disinfectant Active: Chloroxylenol (PCMX). This is the same active ingredient used in Dettol. It is highly effective against a broad spectrum of germs.
  • Odor Neutralizer: Zinc Ricinoleate CW90E. This ingredient chemically traps and neutralizes malodor molecules (like ammonia in urine). Unlike simple perfumes, it removes the smell at the source.
  • The "Cloudy" Effect: To achieve the white cloudiness upon dilution, PCMX must be dissolved in a solvent (like Isopropanol or Pine Oil) and a soap base. When this concentrate hits water, the PCMX and oils "crash" out of solution into tiny droplets, creating the milky appearance.

2. Daily-Use Gentle Formula (Clear & Pet-Safe)

This version is optimized for daily floor mopping. It is extra gentle on pet paws and children's skin while maintaining high cleaning power.

  • Disinfectant Active: General Disinfectant BKC4 (Stabilized). This is a ready-to-dilute Benzalkonium Chloride base. It is more stable and easier to formulate than raw BKC, providing reliable antimicrobial performance.
  • Gentle Cleanser: Decyl Glucoside. A natural, non-ionic surfactant derived from corn and coconut. it is extremely mild and won't irritate your pets' paws or skin if they walk on the floor after it dries.
  • Odor Absorption:
    • If you want to add perfume: Use Zinc Ricinoleate CW90E. It neutralizes bad odors without affecting the fragrance you add.
    • If you do not need perfume: Odor-Kill™ (Maltodextrin-based) is an excellent choice for absorbing atmospheric and surface odors, but it will also absorb any perfume added to the formula.

Formulation Tips for Pet Safety

  1. Dilution is Key: Always dilute these concentrates according to the recommended ratios (e.g., 1:40 or 1:80 for daily mopping).
  2. Contact Time: For effective disinfection, allow the solution to remain on the surface for at least 30-60 seconds before wiping or letting it air dry.
  3. pH Balance: Ensure the final diluted solution is close to neutral (pH 6-8) to be safest for pets. Decyl Glucoside naturally has a high pH, so you may need a small amount of Citric Acid to adjust it.
