Formulating SPF Protect Ultra™ II for Light Texture and Alternative Options
Question
Regarding the SPF Protect Ultra™ II (15%) example formula provided previously (using Milk Lotion Maker 3%, Satin Cream Maker 0.7%, Water 80.3%, Mild Preserved Eco 1% to achieve SPF 50.95, PA++), I would like to know if SPF Protect Ultra™ II can be formulated into a light, non-oily gel or serum texture with SPF 50 PA+++. If so, could you provide a suitable formula? If not, is there an alternative ingredient that can achieve SPF 50 PA+++ with a lighter texture?
Answer
Subject: Regarding SPF Protect Ultra™ II Formulation
Hello,
Thank you for your question. You are asking if SPF Protect Ultra™ II can be formulated into a light, non-oily gel or serum texture with SPF 50 PA+++, and if so, for a formula, or an alternative ingredient.
Based on the information and the nature of SPF Protect Ultra™ II, which is an oil-soluble sunscreen blend, achieving a truly non-oily gel or serum texture at the required concentration (15% for SPF 50) can be challenging. SPF Protect Ultra™ II is typically used in emulsion-based formulations like creams or lotions, which inherently contain an oil phase. The example formula provided previously is a cream, which likely explains the slightly oily feeling you experienced.
While it might be possible to create lighter textures using specific formulation techniques or different emulsifiers/solubilizers, achieving a completely non-oily feel comparable to a pure gel or water-based serum might be difficult with SPF Protect Ultra™ II at this concentration.
As the staff suggested, if a drier, less oily feel is your priority while maintaining SPF 50 PA+++, you might consider using a physical sunscreen like Titanium Dioxide 15nm Liquid (Product ID 724) instead. This ingredient generally provides a drier skin feel compared to formulations using SPF Protect Ultra™ II.
If you are interested in exploring formulations using Titanium Dioxide 15nm Liquid, please let us know, and we can look for example formulas for that ingredient.
We hope this clarifies the possibilities regarding formulation textures for SPF Protect Ultra™ II and suggests a suitable alternative for a drier feel.
