Question

I am formulating a hyaluronic acid gel for very dry skin and have adjusted the pH to 5-6. I want to know if the following combination of moisturizers will be sufficient:

  • Natural Moisturizing Amino Acids
  • MOIST72
  • Water-Lock
  • Aloe

I am also interested in using Trehalose as I haven't used it before. Should I add it to the formula?

Answer

Formulation Advice for Very Dry Skin

Based on the discussion regarding your formulation for very dry skin, here is a summary of the recommendations:

  • The combination of Natural Moisturizing Amino Acids, MOIST72™, and WaterLock™ provides good hydration. However, if dryness persists, it suggests the need to address the underlying skin condition.
  • Aloe is primarily for soothing and calming, not highly effective for severe dryness, so it is recommended to remove it from the formulation.
  • Trehalose (TreMoisture™) is a moisturizer similar to MOIST72™ but MOIST72™ is generally considered more effective. You can include Trehalose, but it might not significantly improve dryness if MOIST72™ alone isn't sufficient.

To better address persistent dryness and help repair the skin, consider adding the following ingredients:

  • Vitamin B5 (Panthenol): This is a highly effective humectant and moisturizer that helps retain moisture, strengthens the skin barrier, reduces inflammation, and aids in wound healing. Recommended at 5%.
  • Allantoin: If there is irritation along with dryness, Allantoin can help reduce irritation, soothe the skin, and support tissue regeneration. Recommended at 0.2%.
  • Repair Activator™: This ingredient helps stimulate the skin's natural DNA repair process, which can be beneficial for damaged skin barriers contributing to dryness. Recommended at 10%.
  • Matrixyl 3000: While known for reducing wrinkles by stimulating collagen, it also has benefits for skin hydration from within by supporting skin structure.
  • Hyaluronic Acid Nano: Adding a nano-sized Hyaluronic Acid (like Hyaluronic Acid (Nano Molecule, 800daltons) or Hyaluronic Acid (Nano Molecule, 2000daltons)) at 0.5% can provide deep hydration as these smaller molecules can penetrate the skin more effectively.

Continuing to make the product as a Hyaluronic Acid gel is appropriate, or you can formulate it as a cream.

Adjusting the pH to 5-6 is crucial, especially for dry skin.

By incorporating these ingredients, you can create a more comprehensive formula that not only moisturizes but also helps repair the skin barrier and address the root cause of persistent dryness.
