Formulation Review: Toner, Cellulite Gel, and Hyaluronic Gel
Question
Could you please review the following formulations and provide advice? I recently received the ingredients.
Toner lotion 1:
- Water (What quantity should be used?)
- Glycerin (What quantity should be used?)
- Panthenol 5%
Toner lotion 2:
- Witch Hazel 50g
- Water 50g
- Which of these toner formulas is better?
Cellulite control gel:
- Green tea extract - 5% (2-3g)
- L-carnitine (2-3g)
- sea kelp bioferment - 50g
Hyaluronic Gel (based on a previous forum post):
- Double Hyaluronic Gel
- L-Ascorbic Acid 10-15%
- Glutathione 1 - 1.5% (according to the L-Ascorbic Acid ratio)
- Disodium EDTA 0.2%
- Can this formula be made without 'Disodium EDTA'?

Formulation Review and Advice
Thank you for sharing your formulations and questions. Let's review each one.
Toner Formulations
You provided two toner formulations:
- Toner Lotion 1: Water, Glycerin, Panthenol 5%
- Toner Lotion 2: Witch Hazel 50g, Water 50g
For Toner Lotion 1, the amount of water and glycerin depends on the desired feel and hydration level. A common starting point for glycerin in a toner is 1-5%. Water would then make up the balance of the formula (e.g., if using 5% Panthenol and 3% Glycerin, Water would be 92%). Panthenol at 5% is a good concentration for moisturizing and soothing.
Toner Lotion 2 is a simple astringent toner using Witch Hazel and Water. Witch Hazel is known for its pore-tightening properties. Using a 50:50 ratio is a standard approach for a basic Witch Hazel toner.
Choosing which is "better" depends on your skin's needs. If you need hydration and soothing, Toner 1 with Glycerin and Panthenol would be more suitable. If you are looking for pore tightening and oil control, Toner 2 with Witch Hazel would be more appropriate. You could also combine elements, perhaps using a lower percentage of Witch Hazel in Toner 1 for a toner that hydrates and offers some astringency.
Cellulite Control Gel
Your Cellulite Control Gel formula includes Green tea extract (5%), L-carnitine (2-3g), and sea kelp bioferment (50g).
- Green Tea Extract (such as Hi-EGCG™ or Pure-EGCG™) is known for its antioxidant and potential anti-inflammatory properties.
- L-Carnitine is often used in cellulite products and is recognized by some regulatory bodies for its potential in this area, as well as providing moisture and helping with skin cell turnover.
- Sea Kelp Extract (like Sea Kelp Extract) is rich in nutrients and can help moisturize and nourish the skin. The usage rate for Sea Kelp Extract is typically 1-10%, with 1-3% recommended for skin care to avoid a fishy smell. Using 50g in a standard 100g batch would be 50%, which is much higher than the recommended range and could cause odor issues and potentially affect the texture.
It's generally recommended to work with percentages for formulations to make scaling easier. Assuming your percentages for Green Tea Extract and L-Carnitine are correct (5% and 2-3%), you might consider using Sea Kelp Extract at a lower percentage, perhaps in the 1-5% range, and adjust the water or base gel accordingly to reach 100%.
Hyaluronic Gel
Your Hyaluronic Gel formula is based on Double Hyaluronic Gel and includes L-Ascorbic Acid (10-15%), Glutathione (1 - 1.5%), and Disodium EDTA (0.2%).
- Double Hyaluron Liquid (or a Hyaluronic Acid Gel Base) provides hydration.
- L-Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) is a potent antioxidant and skin brightener.
- Glutathione is another antioxidant that can work synergistically with Vitamin C.
- Disodium EDTA is a chelating agent.
Regarding your question about making the formula without Disodium EDTA: Disodium EDTA is included in L-Ascorbic Acid formulations to chelate metal ions that can cause Vitamin C to oxidize and degrade quickly. While you can make the formula without it, the stability and shelf life of the L-Ascorbic Acid will be significantly reduced, meaning the product may lose its effectiveness much faster. If you choose not to use Disodium EDTA, it is even more critical to store the product properly (e.g., in an opaque, airtight container in a cool, dark place) and use it quickly.
I hope this review is helpful for your formulations!
