Gel Solid Perfume Formulation and Calculation
Question
I want to make a gel solid perfume using the following formula. Is this formula correct?
- Oil Stick™ Hard 1%
- Oil Stick™ Medium 2%
- Fragrance 20-30% (depending on desired strength)
- Fractionated Coconut Oil rest (to make 100%)
Also, how should I calculate the percentages (1%, 2%, and 20-30% for fragrance) in grams? For example, if 1% is 5 grams, then 2% would be 10 grams. Should the 20-30% for fragrance be calculated in cc?
Answer
Gel Solid Perfume Formula and Calculations
Hello!
Yes, the formula you provided seems like a suitable starting point for a gel-based solid perfume using Oil Stick™ Hard, Oil Stick™ Medium, fragrance oil, and Fractionated Coconut Oil. Oil Stick™ products are commonly used as gelling agents for oils, which aligns with the goal of creating a solid or gel texture.
Regarding the percentages and calculations:
Calculating in Grams: Formulations are typically done by weight (grams) for accuracy. The gram amount for each ingredient depends on the total desired weight of your final product batch.
- If you want to make a total of 100 grams of solid perfume, then 1% is 1 gram, 2% is 2 grams, 20% is 20 grams, and so on.
- If you want to make a total of 500 grams (as suggested by your example where 1% = 5g and 2% = 10g), then 1% is 5 grams, 2% is 10 grams, 20% is 100 grams, etc.
- So, to calculate the grams for any percentage, use the formula: (Percentage / 100) * Total Batch Weight (in grams).
Calculating Perfume (20-30%): It is highly recommended to weigh the fragrance oil in grams rather than measuring by volume (cc or ml). Weighing is more accurate, especially for ingredients used in significant percentages like fragrance, and ensures consistency between batches.
So, for a batch of your desired size, calculate the grams for each ingredient based on its percentage and the total weight. The Fractionated Coconut Oil will be the remaining weight needed to reach 100% of your total batch weight after adding the grams of Oil Stick Hard, Oil Stick Medium, and Fragrance.
I hope this helps with your formulation!
