Question
Regarding a gentle, SLS-free baby shampoo formula, I have two questions:
- What percentage of preservative should be added?
- How can I increase the foam to be like adult shampoo?
Answer
Gentle, SLS-Free Baby Shampoo Formula
Here is a simple formula for a gentle, SLS-free baby shampoo with good foam, suitable for beginners:
- Sulfate Free No-Tear Shampoo Base (pH 6, Clear, Foaming): 25%
- This base is designed to be very gentle and "no-tear," making it ideal for baby products. It provides good foam without harsh sulfates.
- Phenoxyethanol SA (eq. Optiphen Plus): 1%
- This is a broad-spectrum preservative to prevent microbial growth and keep the shampoo safe.
- Purified Water: 74%
- Used as the main diluent.
Total: 100%
Mixing Instructions (Simple Method)
- Measure out the required amount of Purified Water and Sulfate Free No-Tear Shampoo Base.
- Combine the Purified Water and Sulfate Free No-Tear Shampoo Base in a container.
- Stir gently until the base is fully dissolved and the mixture is uniform. Avoid stirring too vigorously, as this can create excessive bubbles.
- Measure out the Phenoxyethanol SA.
- Add the Phenoxyethanol SA to the mixture and stir gently to ensure it is evenly distributed.
- Pour the finished shampoo into your desired bottle.
This formula uses the Sulfate Free No-Tear Shampoo Base at a concentration recommended for baby products, which provides sufficient and gentle foam. No additional foaming agents are typically needed for this base to achieve good lather suitable for children.
