Glitter Settling Issue in Lip Gloss Formulation

Question

I am formulating a lip gloss using [Product Name: LipidSoft Fix] and [Product Name: ReadyMix Iron Oxides Red] (Oil Based), along with Mica and Glitter. I understand that [Product Name: LipidSoft Fix] is for dispersing oil-soluble pigments like [Product Name: ReadyMix Iron Oxides Red]. However, the Mica and Glitter particles are settling at the bottom of the formula.

Could you please explain why [Product Name: LipidSoft Fix] does not prevent the settling of Mica and Glitter? Also, what is the recommended method or ingredient to prevent Mica and Glitter from settling in the lip gloss formula and improve its texture to avoid a sandy feel?

Answer

Subject: Lip gloss glitter settling issue

Regarding the issue of glitter settling in your lip gloss formula:

LipidSoft™ Fix (Product ID 1348) is designed to help disperse pigments that are soluble in oil, such as ReadyMix™ Iron Oxides Red (Product ID 1118). However, it does not prevent the settling of mica or glitter particles (like Golden Pink Mica, Product ID 602), as these particles float in the formula rather than dispersing.

To prevent the mica/glitter from settling and to improve the texture, you need to increase the viscosity of your lip gloss base. This will help suspend the particles evenly throughout the product.

You can achieve this by adding a suitable oil-based thickener to your formula. The recommended options are:

  • Oil Thick Clear (Product ID 1599)
  • Oil Thick Soft (Product ID 1190)
  • Oil-Fix (Product ID 1136)

Choose one of these thickeners and add it to your formula to achieve the desired consistency that keeps the glitter suspended without a sandy feel.
